Following last week’s look at an opening for an Architectural Designer at Vessel Technologies, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for an Assistant Professor of XR Technologies at Arizona State University.
Based at the university’s California satellite campus in the former Los Angeles Herald Examiner Building, the role is housed within the Sidney Poitier New American Film School whose Narrative and Emerging Media Program is dedicated to “next-generation storytelling.” Calling for candidates with backgrounds in areas such as computer science, engineering, computational media, and media arts, the position will form an important part of the school’s mission to use digital technologies and extended reality (XR) in narratives and storytelling.
Why the role interests us
While the latest position at ASU requires a specialization not automatically attained through a conventional architectural career path, the role offers an example of how the increasing adoption of digital technologies in architectural representation can be applied to other fields. Such is the case with extended reality (XR), a term used to describe immersive technologies that merge the physical and digital worlds, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR).
In an architectural context, XR technology already allows architects to create virtual simulations of building designs as both a communicative tool for clients and to identify potential flaws with consultants. For ASU, meanwhile, those same XR technologies can be used to create new forms of journalism, cinematography, and policies, to be deployed by writers, artists, journalists, entrepreneurs, and engineers.
For those interested in incorporating XR technologies in their workflow or career plans, the ASU position also offers insights into the skillset required by leaders in the field. Among the tools listed in the school’s job ad are 3D engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine, programming languages C++, C#, JavaScript, Python, HTML5, AWS, and PostgreSQL, and VR/AR frameworks such as Oculus, Hololens, SteamVR, ARKit/ARCore, MRTK, ARFoundation.
