Last month, we used our Job Highlights series to profile an opportunity to design rural getaways at the full-service Brooklyn studio HUTS. The role offered an example of architectural careers intersecting with popular culture; in this case, the alluring cliché of leaving a bustling city to find peace in nature.
Our editorial frequently sees examples of residential typologies that have captured the mainstream imagination. These include the tiny house movement, minimalist living, and DIY homes; architecturally themed movements capable of sustaining popular Netflix shows, YouTube channels, and Instagram profiles.
For this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series, we are continuing this theme by exploring open opportunities to design off-grid homes in Hawaii. The roles, advertised by Haiku-based Hawaii Off-Grid, offers interested applicants the opportunity to engage with a typology which had already become popularized in mainstream culture long before recent rising energy costs or climate concerns could add to their economic and environmental appeal.
Founded by architect David Sellers and civil engineer Jake Freeman after the two friends met on the island of Palmyra Atoll, the studio has grown to provide on-grid and off-grid solutions for Hawaii’s unique context. Their work has also included collaborations with the Blue Planet Foundation, the Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Project, and Mana’o Radio, Maui’s only independent radio station.
“We are looking for long-term team members that are passionate about net-positive off-grid building and renewable energy,” the firm notes. “And if you like Mana'o / Independent Radio, then you'll fit right in.”
The open roles at Hawaii Off-Grid were also featured in our recent roundup of architecture jobs focusing on sustainability and urban ecology, which included a sustainability coordinator role in New York City, and an urban ecology research role for KieranTimberlake in Philadelphia.
Candidates interested in applying can learn more about the latest developments in off-grid and microgrid architecture by exploring our dedicated coverage of the topic, including energy independence proposals in Chicago and San Francisco, how solar battery storage will impact off-grid living, and exemplar off-grid projects such as a readymade cabin by Snøhetta in Norway, and an off-grid minimalist chapel by Alvaro Siza in Portugal.
