A few short weeks removed from the greenlighting of its proposed Ocean Avenue project in Santa Monica, Gehry Partners has revealed a new design for a Headwaters Pavilion to the LA River Greenway located within a city-owned plot in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Canoga Park.
Urbanize LA is reporting the firm will present its proposal to the city’s Cultural Affairs Commission on Wednesday. It was designed in collaboration with OLIN and will reportedly entail a sculptural shade canopy and public restrooms which frame the park entrance from the north-facing Bassett Street and Alabama Avenue. The total estimated cost of the design is $5.1 million.
Pedestrian improvements and added seating amenities are planned for the site as well, along with added water retention infrastructure. Both entities have been involved in the LA River project since its inception seven years ago. Gehry’s role in the project has been heavily-scrutinized from the outset, coming under fire as potential fodder for real estate interests and, for a while, taking backstage to his collaborators’ proposed designs before LA County officials finalized the plan in its current iteration back in May.
This represents Gehry’s latest commission in Los Angeles in a calendar year that has thus far seen his firm unveil designs for the Colburn School of Music downtown and complete the new Children's Institute campus in Watts, in addition to reaching significant construction milestones on its Warner Brothers’ Second Century expansion in Burbank, which is set to open next year.

Heavily scrutinized? More like working in secret to reveal a scheme to bury the river by ‘caps’ for a stage set of parks and performance buildings while the media fawned over him. Also worth mentioning losing the opportunity to restore the river to a more natural setting for another 100 years channeling the fear and spirit of the army core of engineers 100+ years ago. Why intellectualize something that already exists and could be restored? That’s Gehry.
Gehry has a once in a lifetime opportunity to lead the charge for a HollywoodLighouse!
