In 2019, ten architects, artists, designers, and academics came together to discuss their plans for an upcoming exhibition with MoMA's curatorial team. Emanuel Admassu, Germane Barnes, Sekou Cooke, J. Yolande Daniels, Felecia Davis, Mario Gooden, Walter J. Hood, Olalekan Jeyifous, V. Mitch McEwen, and Amanda Williams gathered to discuss what their involvement and exhibition would be and represent. These conversations and exchanges of thoughts and opinions helped birth the Black Reconstruction Collective (BRC).
Founded in 2020, the BRC has gone on to develop groundbreaking work like the MoMA exhibition Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America, as well as receiving grants from the Graham Foundation, Open Society, and the Mellon Foundation.
At their core, the group's primary mission "to multi-scalar and multi-disciplinary work" is dedicated to dismantling "systemic white supremacy and hegemonic whiteness within art, design, and academia." The founding members exercised their creative forces to further engage the public through design and exhibition work that amplifies the value, importance, and research of Black artists, designers, and scholars.
What's important to note is that the formation of the Black Reconstruction Collective goes beyond their iconic and evocative MoMA exhibition. The individuals involved in this collective aim to deconstruct years of embedded systemic racism within the realms of architecture and its affiliate disciplines by providing funding, design, resources, and support to foster the growth and liberation of the African Diaspora.
As the group's initiatives grow, they plan to expand their team as they search for a Collaborative Coordinator. According to the BRC, they seek an individual who can "assist the next phase of development and work collaboratively with the ten founding board members to transition from a founding board to governing board to achieve the BRC's mission."
Their ideal candidate will not only have a "Masters degree in Arts Management, Fine Arts, Art History, Non-Profit Management or a related field" they must also have experience within curatorial practices, the arts, and architecture. In addition, the BRC not only looks for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, but an "emergent leader" who will "help guide the BRC through its current chapter of institutional development and is dedicated to establishing a collaborative organization with empathy, intellectual rigor, and spirited energy."
Examples of duties and responsibilities include administrative work, awards program management, fundraising oversight, and financial management. With this full-time position, the group is also transparent in their compensation for the role and the inclusion of health benefits, travel stipends, and an intern assistant.
