In a follow-up to its recently announced renovation, the Tampa Museum of Art is growing once again thanks to a new $65 million expansion effort led by Weiss/Manfredi.
Overlooking Tampa’s Hillsborough River, the new expansion affords a footprint that is almost double in size to 120,000 square feet. The added space allows for more education and exhibition initiatives while creating public amenities like a roof terrace and café that will enhance the museum’s status as the premier cultural destination in the rapidly growing metropolitan area.
The TMA is currently in the process of renovating its existing 69,000-square-foot facility designed by Stanley Saitowitz in 2010. The renovation, meant to coincide with the institution’s centennial anniversary, is also being overseen by Weiss/Manfredi and is expected to wrap up next June. Put together, the overall effort will add some 51,000 square feet to the museum’s waterfront campus thanks to $80 million in private funds taken from the museum’s patrons and board of trustees.
“We are inspired by the potential of the Tampa Museum of Art renovation and expansion to create a dynamic and inviting community destination and are thrilled to continue working with the Tampa Museum of Art to realize this extraordinary vision," Weiss/Manfredi said in a joint statement.
The firm also recently completed a successful renovation at the nearby Baker Museum in Naples, Florida. The TMA expansion project will get underway in the coming months with an expected completion set for 2024.
