The Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design announced that the 2020-21 Frank Gehry International Visiting Chair in Architectural Design is renowned Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal, OC, FRAIC. Cardinal is known both for his striking designs and for his advocacy for the rights and dignity of Indigenous peoples.
"The vicissitudes of Douglas Cardinal’s life are one of those larger-than-life tales — from the nurture of home, to the trauma of residential schools, and then perseverance and a precocious commitment to architecture and the evolution of a unique idiom of design," says associate professor Robert Levit in a statement. "We are thrilled to have him joining us this year at the Daniels Faculty to share his thoughts on architecture, and to host conversations with our students."
Cardinal's career spans over more than five decades. He has completed buildings, masterplans, and land use plans throughout Canada and the United States. Some of his best-known works include St. Mary's Church in Red Deer, the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, and the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C.
The new Chair will give a series of four lectures, in collaboration with the Daniels Faculty, throughout his appointment. The lectures will take place on January 14th, February 4th, February 25th, and March 25th.

The significance of the museum of Canadian history (previously known as museum of civilization) cannot be understated but there much more to his work than just this project (which I see everyday from across the river when I head to the office). Hopefully they make the lectures available through the RAIC.
One of the greatest living architects! UofT Daniels faculty and students are lucky to have him.
Fortunately caught his lecture in Calgary (two years ago?) - he has absolutely no BS in his philosophy and design approach, and is such a down-to-earth person.
I attended one of his lectures 5 years ago in Ottawa. A shame they could not host it in his own museum at that time.
