On October 6th, the Pritzker Architecture Prize will release a special video dedicated to 2020 Laureates Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. The documentary-style archival video will highlight the duo's work, their reflections on the industry, and a special message to aspiring architects.
For the first time in 42 years, the Pritzker Prize Awards ceremony will not be held in-person. Yet, the special video tribute will include elements of the traditional Prize ceremony, exclusive, never-before-seen footage of the Laureates and images of their work.
With acceptance speeches delivered remotely, this year's prize winners shared their thoughts in specific locations allowing viewers to look into public and private sites worldwide. For example, McNamara shared words while standing in the Long Room, the main chamber of the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin.
Check out our Archinect Sessions episode with Yvonne Farrell from 2016 to hear more directly from one of the two architects.
"Standing here almost alone in this room, celebrating this wonderful honor of the Pritzker Prize, with no audience, brings to mind the empty stage of a Samuel Beckett play. But of course, we are not alone. We are in a space which holds time, and knowledge, and treasures of the mind. We can feel the presences of all the great people who passed through this great space. We chose this room so that we could celebrate the power of architecture here in our own city. So that we would feel part of a bigger order, which of course is one of the functions of architecture.”
