At the end of 2019, Second Home Hollywood opened its doors to the Los Angeles area as a remedy for flipping the script on co-working spaces and a community-driven work environment. Designed by the Madrid-based studio SelgasCano, its fresh take on integrating the indoor-outdoor aesthetic, mixed with lush greenery, open office spaces, and wellness driven design created a working oasis for LA creatives. However, as the pandemic quickly impacted the day-to-day office grind, the transition to working from home forced a new outlook on the future of working in an office and creative workspaces.
As California is slowly picking up the pieces and adjusting to COVID-19 safety precautions, businesses are opening; however, office culture is still reshaping its "new normal." Carolina A. Miranda of the LA Times, investigates office spaces in a post-pandemic future. Her case study, Second Home Hollywood.
Plans for surviving and thriving post-pandemic is an ongoing question at a national and global scale. However, thanks to its unique design and resilient approach to shared space planning Second Home Hollywood provides an answer.
After refurbishing the existing 1960's structure, designed by iconic architect Paul Revere Williams, with SelgasCano's contemporary office design, the site is transformed into an ideal indoor-outdoor workspace. Without skimping on greenery, each outdoor meeting room, office space, and courtyard is surrounded by lush plant life. While the main refurbished building is closed due to pandemic protocols, the surrounding offices are individually ventilated with windows that open wide. An enclosed roof or hallway doesn't confine the open walkways connecting each elliptical office space.
Second Home's Hollywood outpost has lent itself to continuing as a functional space adjusting to what's happening now for businesses adapting to a post-pandemic life. SelgasCano's intention to mix wellness, play, and resilient design while responding to Second Home's entrepreneurial approach has proven successful.
