Facebook is due to commence construction on its 12th data center in the United States with a new $800 million, 907,000-square-foot facility located in DeKalb, Illinois. The data center will be powered by 100% renewable energy and will use 80% less water than the average data center, the company writes in a statement. Upon completion, the project will obtain LEED Gold certification. 

Moreover, the new facility will provide an estimated 100 operational jobs and employ an estimated 1,200 construction workers who will be working onsite for "several years," according to the company. Mortenson Construction was selected as the general contractor for the job. An architect for the project has not been listed.

Facebook has also partnered with the City of DeKalb, Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District, and Krusinski Construction Company to help design, build, and support the infrastructure for the 500-acre site. The work includes nearly three  miles of water lines, one and a half miles of sewer extensions, and repaving local roads.
