With the new year already in full swing, it's time to take a look at some of the upcoming high-profile museum projects and anticipated expansions of major cultural institutions that are scheduled to open, or re-open, in 2020.
The Art Newspaper has published an insightful overview of 25 heavy-weights of the global museum world to keep an eye on this year, including Frank Gehry's $525 million Philadelphia Museum of Art overhaul, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston redevelopment by Steven Holl, the Renzo Piano-designed GES-2 art center in a former Moscow power plant, Oslo's new Munch Museum by Herreros Arquitectos, the billion-dollar Grand Egyptian Museum by Heneghan Peng in Cairo, the wHY-designed Asian Art Museum expansion in San Francisco, Berlin's anticipated Humboldt Forum, the phased reopening of the Denver Art Museum, and, another major Piano project, the long-overdue Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, among others.
