In 1961, early in the architect's career, Paul Rudolph completed the Milam Residence in Ponte Verda Beach, Florida. Fortunately, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, and, according to the Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundation, "the family of Arthur W. Milam, who originally commissioned the building, have been owner-residents since the building was finished, and have cared for it with pride. Now, they are making the building available - and they are hoping that the next owner will be struck by the building’s many beauties and virtues, as well as understanding its importance as a work of truly great Modern architecture."
Rudolph himself described the Milam residence as “a composition of considerable spatial variety with vertical and horizontal interpenetration of spaces clearly defin[ing] inside and out. Gone are the earlier notions of organization through regular structure with subdivisions of space freely spaced. Spatial organization has taken the place of purely structural organization. Floors and walls are extended in elaborated forms toward the views, thereby making of the facade a reflection of the interior space. The brises-soleil also serve as mullions for the glass, turning the exterior wall into a series of deep openings filled only with glass. The exceptional wild Florida site 60 ft. above the Atlantic Ocean is a counterfoil to the geometry of the structure.”

Hi - thank you for sharing the news about the Milam Residence! The Milam family has put a lot of work into restoring the beachfront to protect the house and is looking for a lover of Rudolph or Modernist architecture to buy and preserve it. Please contact us on our website via the link above if you are interested in more information. Thanks!

Kevin Dickinson at Paul Rudolf Heritage Foundation has done a great job of getting the word out on the Milam House. Also I want to thank Archinect News for posting this nice article as well. Please contact me for more information on the house. I am the trustee and grew up in the home. I have many good stories to share and our family wants the new owner to be a Paul Rudolf fan.
