The project, which would rise at 8850-8878 Sunset Boulevard, calls for the construction of a 15-story building featuring 115 guest rooms, ground-floor commercial space, and various guest amenities. The proposed development would also incorporate 31 condominiums, 10 units of affordable housing, and parking for up to 300 vehicles. — Urbanize
The 15-story, 200-foot-tall design is composed of two drastically different volumes separated by a large open gap. The volume on the east side of the lot appears to be a relatively standard steel and glass orthogonal structure, while the form on the west side of the lot is a highly articulated, fluid structure that brings Zaha Hadid's forms to mind. The base of the two structures in the concept design rendering appears to provide some outdoor space, perhaps an outdoor amphitheater, above the ground floor commercial level.

yeah, NO!
Mayne never met a budget he couldn't bust for no good reason.
I see the nickname coming:
he hasn't had a hit in some time , remember this shit?
Old man's finally lost it.
And that's why he'll go teaching full-time again: https://archinect.com/news/art...
at Sci-Arc that too.
looks like another version of that Zaha (or was it ZHA) building ..... seems more aimed at internet meme culture than reality
it’s too bad, I like Morphy when they don’t go too far of the rails. But there’s no media reward or attention for good building anymore (except with rich and tasteful clients)
topic for debate: which is less damaging to the profession - Mayne's architecture or Mayne as a teacher of architecture?
Mayne as a teacher of architecture
I swear this thing grows on you. I just took a virtual tour down Sunset Blvd. The building fits in well with how well nothing fits in well in the area, including the IAC environmentally friendly renovation, nearby:
Sigh.
Separate the two buildings a few feet, making two buildings. Then where are we? If nothing else, it should open up a debate about architecture now. On the one hand, orderly buildings clad in greenery to the point of being self-effacing vs., on the other, out there, anything goes designs. These are schizophrenic times.
indeed
“Structure? What’s that?”
“Egress? Don’t even talk to me about function, it’s still the Schematic Design Phase. Don’t remind me that I have to actually make this work.”
“I’m pretty sure the water will do what I tell it to do, and so it won’t get into the building.”
Things one might hear from a deZigner.
I remember his early work which was playful and charming, splashing copper here and there. This building is ugly, banal, and aggressive. What the hell happened to him? If Sci-Arc is getting this guy, good luck.
yuck
