Marking the end of the World Architecture Festival, the winner of the 2018 World Building of the Year was presented to Kampung Admiralty by WOHA Architects. Having also won the award for the Commercial Mixed - Completed Projects, the firm can now add this prestigious award to their repertoire of accolades.
Known for their approach and passion in integrating social and environmental principles to their projects, Kampung Admiralty is a shining example of the firm's execution and methodology toward a high-density, high-amenity mini-city. Located in Northern Singapore, the building is comprised of community spaces, housing for the elderly, medical facilities, retail, restaurants, and cafes all shared within a single ventilated structure featuring a tropical rainforest roof.
Judges were amazed at the enormous mixed-use building, Singapore's first integrated public development. The elaborate green terraces intertwine with the building's layered "sandwich" approach. Program Director of the World Architecture commented on the structures features stating "The judges admired the project for the way in which it dealt with the universal condition of longevity and health treatments, social housing provision, and commercial space, which enabled substantial public realm benefits. This hybrid building also incorporates a huge amount of greenery (more than 100% of its footprint) in a series of layered levels which have generated welcome biodiversity."
Highlighting the project's ability to display how cities and countries around the world could learn from the mixed-use building's highly functional features. Its overall ability to connect to its surround areas through transportation while tackling a natural ventilation strategy is what won this year's "super-jury" over. Among the jurors were Nathalie de Vries (Director and Co-Founder of MVRDV) and Federick Cooper Llosa (Founder and Senior Partner of COOPER, GRANA, NICOLINI, Arquitectos).
