The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is preparing for another eventful year at the Moshe Safdie-designed Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on November 4-6. Architects, designers, and clients from around the world gather to witness the happenings of the live architecture competition and form connections with some 2,000 of their fellow attendees. Needless to say, the competition attracts a number of stellar projects from today's leading designers, so it's anyone's game.
For 2015, the WAF shortlist boasts 338 projects across 31 categories from architects based in 46 countries.
From top to bottom: Fulton Center by Grimshaw; Cardedeu by EMC Arquitectura; Nanyang Technological University by Heatherwick Studio; Ribbon Chapel by Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP Co. Ltd.
During the event, WAF competitors will get the chance to interact and hear critiques from the 2015 ‘super jurors’: Sir Peter Cook (UK), Sou Fujimoto (Japan), Benedetta Tagliabue (Spain), Charles Jencks (UK/US), Kerry Hill (Singapore) and Manuelle Gautrand (France). Winners at the end of both live-competition days move on to compete for the coveted 2015 World Building of the Year award, whose recipient is announced at the conclusion of the festival.
On a side note, the competition entries are displayed at WAF's new London satellite location from June 24-27 before making their way to Singapore.
Interior designers also get another shot at competing in WAF's equally anticipated 2015 INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors live competition, which highlights some top-notch projects in the international interior design scene from within the last 12 months.
From top to bottom: Exploded by One Plus Partnership; Mecha Uma by Jorge Yulo Architects & Associates; Unlimited Boundary, Infinite Vision by Kris Lin Interior Design; Hotel Hotel Ground Floor by March Studio.
The competition format is the same. Fifty INSIDE nominees across 9 categories will go head-to-head as they compete in the form of live presentations and debates to a distinguished jury. One project will then win World Interior of the Year 2015. In recent editions, Joyce Wang Studio's MOTT32 restaurant in Hong Kong won the title for 2014, and David Kohn Architects’ Carrer Avinyó apartment refurbishment in Barcelona won in 2013.
