Construction of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' expansion project in Washington D.C. is still underway. Known as The REACH, the new building is the Center's first expansion in its 47-year history. Breaking ground in 2014, The REACH is currently scheduled to open on September 7, 2019.
Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the 4.6-acre project will add some 72,000 square-feet of much-needed interior space, increasing the Center's public areas by more than 20 percent.
Envisioned as an open, interconnected space, the building will add rehearsal and classroom space to support the Center's new and existing programs, while offering public access. “We imagine an energized, active space where visitors can go behind the scenes, observe an intimate performance, or simply sit and enjoy the stunning architecture and river views,” commented Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter.
The REACH will include: three interconnected pavilions with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, 11 flexible art/event/classroom spaces, a cafe, green roof, an outdoor stage and video project wall, and 130,000 square-feet of landscaping and gardens. It'll also provide multiple connections to the existing Center as well as a new pedestrian bridge spanning Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway that leads to the National Mall and other D.C. landmarks.
Previously set at $175 million in 2015, the Center's new goal for its “Building the Future” capital campaign to fund the REACH is now $250 million. The Center has raised $170 million so far.
