For nearly 30 years, the 105-story tower has been a mystery. Located in Pyongyang, North Korea, the Ryugyong Hotel was billed to be the world's tallest hotel but has yet to host a guest, making it instead, the world's largest unoccupied building. But, on Friday, the country took down some walls around the construction area causing many to speculate that the building might finally open in the near future.
Dubbed the "Hotel of Doom" by Western media, the building broke ground way back in 1987, with construction expected to take only two years. An overly optimistic goal from the get-go, construction dragged on until 1992 when it was halted by a major economic crisis in North Korea caused by the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2008, construction on the hotel's exterior resumed with Egypt's Orascom Telecommunications Holdings injecting $30 million into the project. Upon completion of the buildings' exterior in 2011, the international mobile network company supported another $15 million to assist with the 360,000 square meters of interior.
Since assuming power three years ago, Kim Jong Un has ordered the construction of a number of skyscrapers and has invested in a massive redevelopment of Pyongyang. So, it comes as little surprise that the dictator would want to do something with the massive pyramid-shaped building.
The unveiling gives little detail of what may be to come. It remains unclear if Friday's reveal suggests intention to actually finish the long-stalled project—that may not even be structurally sound—or just to make better use of the land around it. Two broad new walkways leading to the building are now both visible and usable and a giant red propaganda sign that reads "Rocket Power Nation" now faces the street.
The erection of the sign follows the test launching of North Korea's second ICBM, which many believe is a demonstration that the country's weapons can now reach most parts of the United States.
