While Rem Koolhaas called smart homes “potentially sinister”, his former protege Bjarke Ingels seems to have no problem with them. BIG has partnered up with Friday Labs, a smart home product company, to design a smart lock.
The door lock is connected to your smart phone so you can give access to your house remotely—say if a friend is visiting from out of town or if you’re worried your kids will forget to lock the door on their way out. It’s about the size of a coffee cup, the company notes, and its ergonomic, BIG-design is sure to be one of its major selling points. The shell is available in several interchangeable colors.
Here’s hoping hackers can’t get access. Or, as Koolhaas warns, that these sleek smart locks don’t “betray you”.

big designs a thumbturn for a smart lock

It's hard to tell from those images but it doesn't look like there's a manual / key override? ...That's a big potential issue.
What happens when the battery dies? I'll be that thing will be hacked before it gets to production.
But it's available in several interchangeable colors!

I still enjoy my front door's REMOTIZER as I don't worry about IP address configuration, hackers, monthly fees, power outages, or tech support. I simply lock and unlock like I do my garage door opener. Easy- Peasey. Since I kept my original lock, I can use my metal key if I forget to change batteries once per year.
It would be so much better if home smart devices stuck to Bluetooth instead of IP/wifi configurations. That way there is some privacy and control. If you are willing to put in cameras or connect your thermostat to wifi, then you are giving up your privacy and eventually control.
As for design, I think more architects should be involved in these smart home devices to offer a better viewpoint. Unfortunately, BIG doesn't really offer much here other than styling.
Here’s hoping hackers can’t get access
