Border Bang | Opening on July 9, recommended by Nicholas Korody
Discussions of the US/Mexico border tend to be highly charged – particularly in today's political climate (and for good reason). Often lost in these conversations is how the border itself is the site of a rich and complex culture. The animator Jorge R. Gutierrez has created a "love letter" to the California/Tijuana border and the bootleg items sold there, "telling viewers and consumers not to glorify these situations but rather to acknowledge them through their subversive presentation."
Fast Forward: The Architecture of William F. Cody | Opening on July 10, recommended by Alexander Walter
If you can't get enough of that good Southern California Midcentury Modernism stuff, the A+D has just the right fix for you: Fast Forward: The Architecture of William F. Cody celebrates the architect's fascinating body of work which, in the early days, helped define the look and flair of Palm Springs and, later on, contributed to the rise of Modernism beyond California and the United States. The exhibition features rare color renderings of Cody's personal sketches, photographs of now-lost structures, as well as examples of ultra-thin structural systems that were ahead of their time and set the pace of building innovation.
M. Casey Rehm: Control | Open now until July 31, recommended by Justine Testado
Currently at SCI-Arc, Control is a new installation that reflects the multimedia and very timely work of M. Casey Rehm and Kinch, his design and algorithmic consultation studio. The Control installation embraces the temporality and “the narcissistic and exhibitionist qualities” of present-day society. It “exploits the ubiquitous distribution of intelligent agents as daily mediators of our environment and lives as a device to rethink surface and tectonic as instruments in service to both human and inhuman agencies”.
Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life | Open now until October 2, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg
Cindy Sherman, “Untitled #92”, 1981, chromogenic color print, 24 x 48 in. (60.96 x 121.92 cm). Image via The Broad Museum
Master of personalities and narrative suggestion, Cindy Sherman is one of photography's living legends. This massive survey exhibition at Diller Scofidio + Renfro's Broad Museum focuses mostly on her work in the milieu of film, exploring female iconography and the photographer's gaze. This exhibition is sure to attract crowds far past its opening, so make sure to arrive early.
