How Participatory Design is Changing Los Angeles | May 24, recommended by Nicholas Korody

Hosted by the California Historical Society at Gensler's LA offices, this panel discussion will engage with the benefits of soliciting public input in design processes. Putting its money where its mouth is, the panel will be structured around audience questions and attendants will be asked to write down their questions on post-it notes when they arrive. It's a great roster of panelists who really know what they're talking about when it comes to participatory design and shouldn't be missed by anyone interested in civic-minded design.

Where Architects Live Tour: Dan Brunn | May 24, recommended by Alexander Walter

As part of its popular Where Architects Live Tour series, AIA|LA presents the private residence of architect Dan Brunn as this week's highlight. Originally hailing from Tel Aviv, Brunn applied his Bauhaus-inspired ultra-modern/clean/sleek design aesthetics to this 1950s Hancock Park structure, thus turning a typical LA bungalow into a minimalist retreat. 

Routine Pleasures | Opens May 25, recommended by Justine Testado

When it comes to working on a project, everyone has their own routine. Based on Manny Farber's 1962 essay “White Elephant Art vs. Termite Art”, the Routine Pleasures exhibition at the MAK Center explores “the termite tendency”, focusing on artists who work with a quieter, process-oriented approach. “Like termites, [these artists] focus closely on what is before them, and follow the work wherever it may lead, often in diffuse directions”.

Thom Mayne Discussion, Q&A and Book Signing - "Morphosis" | May 28, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg

Start out your Memorial Day weekend with some inspiration from 2005 Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne, as he reflects on his firm's entire project catalogue, recently collected in the monograph, “Morphosis”. The Q&A and book signing event is the perfect opportunity for both the uninitiated and the well-versed to learn a bit more about Morphosis's work.

Francois Dallegret: The World Upside-Down | Open now until June 26, recommended by Nicholas Korody

If you're not already familiar with the work of Francois Dallegret, then you don't really have an option but to head over to WUHO Gallery this Thursday. The French architect and futurist crafted inventive speculations that were much before his time and remain loaded with significance. Probably best known for his collaborations with Reyner Banham, Dallegret truly “defies categorization.”
