“People involved in building stadiums are usually very reliant on the firms who have demonstrated a strong record in understanding sports sites,” [Christopher S.] Dunlavey said. “BIG is known very well for very innovative architecture and design, but they haven’t been known for that kind of expertise.” — Washington Post
National Football League sports stadium design isn't usually a province of the starchitect, but in typical convention-defying style, the Bjarke Ingels Group isn't letting that deter them. In other parts of the world, starchitects have had mixed success with stadium design; Herzog & de Meuron's Bird's Nest for the 2008 Olympics was widely considered to be a success, while Zaha Hadid's proposed New National Stadium for Japan devolved into a nightmare of construction cost inflation and politics. The politics behind the STILL-insensitively-named Redskins' stadium are already fraught; among other issues, the team is trying to lock down a site. Good luck, Bjarke!

Exiting to see proposal--stadiums are so expensive though, any design moves are too costly. Which is why BIG is probably ideal, as they have developed a strong formula that uses kind of platonic shapes that can be filled with anything.
Eisenman's Arizona NFL stadium is pretty good...
Washington's current stadium isn't even 20 years old. This is either a premature unnecessary replacement, or the original was so poorly designed that Snyder should demand his money back.
Hmm.....I sincerely question whether an architect should work for a racist organization such as the Washington D.C. football team without question is.
BIG should help with the branding... Change the name to "Redskins With Terraced Green Space On Top"
I guess there aren't any Architects in D.C. ...
I worked in DC for two years... it's corporate outposts and 5 person boutiques. Never found much in between.
It's interesting how a racist name could tarnish their reputation. But they seem more salesman than architects--looking at their process, there seems to be a glibness behind the various shape stacking options, like the purpose is to only sell you something, and there's no way a salesman walks from a sale. Whats crazy is how many red flags I see now in the BIG process. Is this another "the BIG Short"? LOL
