Wood latticework, green shrubbery, sunken sports fields and temple-like touches can be seen in the two final design proposals for Tokyo’s controversial new Olympic Stadium. [...] The new proposals [...] are more understated in style and also smaller in physical form compared to the originally commissioned design. [...]

Design A - rumored to be by the office of Kengo Kuma.
Design B - believed to come from Toyo Ito's firm.
Which design is your immediate favorite? Who is going to finally build the Japan National Stadium? Let us know in the comment section.

At this point the issue should really be which proposal can be built the fastest? The whole process has been a cluster to say the least. I didn't really like the ZHA proposal, but in all seriousness the Japanese committee would've been better served staying the course and building that monstrosity rather than re-opening the competition for what looks to be some very lack-luster submissions. I hope they have some good narratives to go with those money-shots. Any way you cut it they're now going to have a very expensive process ahead of them to get the centerpiece stadium ready for an Olympics that is only about 4.5 years out...
They should just make some temporary POS that is safe and functional and then rip it down when it's over. Fuck the Olympics. Such a total waste of resources. Or hey maybe it can be an opera house afterwards?
Only 4-1/2 years? LOL
Fukushima will still be boiling over ... funny how we don't hear anything about that.
I like the rumored-to-be Kengo Kuma one - seems to have some interesting idea of using wood and plantings to feel a little less clinical than a typical stadium, though not quite there yet.
Toyo Ito's just seems stuck in place there. And kind of suggests the more vulgar metaphors Zaha often gets criticized for.
Though ZHA was treated with undeserved contempt in this process, it seems more proper that a country with so many excellent architects as Japan should stick with home talent for something like this. Otherwise the event becomes just another gathering point for the same bunch of international performers. What's the point of white elephants if they're all the same?
