Jakarta sinks an average of three inches a year, and parts of the coast are going down as much as 11 inches a year [...]
In an attempt to halt the damage, authorities are building a gigantic wall off the coast, measuring 25 miles (40 kilometers) long and 80 feet (24 meters) high, National Geographic reports. To fund the $40 billion and 30-year-long project, the city will also create 17 artificial islands, on which developers can build luxury homes, offices, and shopping malls.

A Dutch firm, KuiperCompagnons, is assisting with design. The first phase of the three-part plan is underway, although critics say that the project will encourage more government corruption and actually cause more environmental damage than it would help prevent.

You guys, a wall isn't gonna work.
Hey look, another pigeon inspired design!
blocking the effects of global warming with "luxury homes and shopping malls"...lol lol lol kinda like building a new heart valve out of hamburger meat and dorittos.
this is why the free masons, illuminati, and the build-a-burgers (people who meet at a hotel), council on foreign relations, tri-lateral whatever, and ancient Aliens are trying to drag us into WWIII by pitting the first largest religion against the world againt the second that will. can you not see the vision?......I wonder if the sinking of Jakarta is good for politcal propoganda? didnt anyone ever watch Kevin Costner's masterpiece Water world?
It works in the Netherlands for the most part, doesn't it? As a comparison though I wonder how much it would cost to build a wall around greenland to keep the meltwater in. Maybe make the world's largest freshwater reservoir.
or just build a floating city like they can on holland. why fight it when you can live with it?
FoG didn't get the commission ... WTF?
^Olaf, have you read the book Earth by David Brin? It had bands of stateless people who lived on fleets of boats. I expect that will be part of the future. Like a less romantically aestheticized Waterworld.
Great comment, jla-x!
And my comment was supposed to include the image of the kaiju Mutavore busting through the wall around Sydney from Pacific Rim. I'm having image trouble lately.
I think what they are missing in this design is input from someone like BIG that can work within sustainability and the new modern culture while still providing brilliant architecture that will last well longer than if done by a lesser architect.
ARP1 you made that comment elsewhere I believe....you must be SPAM!
^ he is bjarke himself, anonymous self promoting; either that or this is his boyfriend.
will look that book up midlander.
BIG = SPAM ?
Does promoting BIG get paid? I'm willing to do it for $100 per post since I generally like their work. $1000/post for ugly stuff.
