It is a surreal urban bubble, where normal life unfolds at an abnormal altitude. To access ground level, residents drive their cars down a ramp. A tall metal fence runs around the perimeter to make sure no one falls or drives off. Peer beyond the fence and you can spot the city’s landmarks below. — The Guardian
In Jakarta, Indonesia exists a suburb, unlike any other. Cosmo Park is unique because it can be found ten stories above ground on top of a shopping mall. At ground level, Jakarta is a city that succumbs to many issues. Many cities around the world suffer from their fair share of obstacles. However, Jakarta has experienced a series of challenges.
The Indonesian capital has had experienced a rapid increase in urban growth resulting from flooding and other natural disasters. Congestion, gridlocked traffic, and a breakdown in the city's ecology are other factors that would beg to question, perhaps the idea of Cosmo Park is a viable option for alternative urban developments?
In a recent post from The Guardian, the development of Cosmo Park was relatively unknown and out of the public eye for many years. However, thanks to a recent Twitter post from @shahrirbahar1, the photo caught the attention of many. Accumulating nearly 27,000 retweets many began to express their reaction to this "urban oasis." Located on top of the Thamrin City Mall, the idyllic suburban area has become a little oasis for residents.
Good morning Jakarta. Macam mana lah diorang terfikir nak develop taman perumahan atas bangunan? pic.twitter.com/TNQrnEQ8eA

The Guardian shares one resident's response to life in the sky, "It's high here, for sure. But lots of places are, and here we have more space and privacy, and it's better for my family. My son can play outside, just out the door." Many have considered this development built by the Indonesian property developer Agung Podomoro Group an example of a postmodern dystopia. One of two "sky-high" suburban developments the second can be found above the Mall of Indonesia.
The community comes complete with 78 two-story units, tennis courts, asphalt roads, a large community pool, and lush greenery. Residents praise the development, specifically by making them feel safe. With floods being a common occurrence in the city, many attribute their reasons for choosing to live at Cosmo Park because of flood protection.
Is this urban development alternative a viable option in the long run? Cosmo Park was built in 2009, and since its opening residents seem to feel pleased and reassured in the park's environment. However, one resident joked that she misses the "kaki lima" (street food carts).

Oh no... What have we done...
It’s basically bringing us one step closer to the Old New York underground city in Futurama.
