Archinect's Must-Do Picks for Archtober 2015 - Week 3 (Oct. 17-24)
Looking for exciting things to do in New York City this month? Lucky you, Archtober is back for another year with a rich program of engaging exhibitions, lectures, conferences, films, tours, parties, and other activities to celebrate the value of architecture and design in everyday life.

From the plethora of exciting Archtober events, we've compiled some highlights from Oct. 17-24:
- AFHny’s Day of Impact | Oct. 17
Join fellow architects and design professionals in making an impact in our boroughs, through AFHny’s annual city-wide service day! Participants will collaborate with some of New York City’s best volunteer-based organizations by getting hands-on with painting, planting, and rebuilding projects, all of which will improve our neighborhoods on both physical and social levels.
- Family Day @ the Center: Everyone Builds with LEGO Bricks! | Oct. 17
Families will explore architecture, design and construction with everyone's favorite building material - LEGO bricks! Warm up with fun design challenges, playing with the basics of massing, corbeling and spanning. From there, anything goes! Create a LEGO masterpiece for our model city, inspired by New York City bridges and skyscrapers.
- Open House New York Weekend | Oct. 17
From historical to contemporary, residential to industrial, hundreds of sites across the five boroughs are open to visit, with tours, talks, performances, and other special events taking place over the course of OHNY Weekend. Through the unparalleled access that it enables, OHNY Weekend deepens our understanding of the importance of architecture and urban design to foster a more vibrant civic life.
- Urban Nature Symposium | Oct. 17
The symposium will explore themes of urban ecology, energy circulation, urban planning, and art dealing with urban nature. The discussions will analyze the city as a place for encounter of nature and culture, as well as the significance of the local nature in creating an enjoyable environment for urban habitation. The program combines presentations on research, art and design.
- Architecture & Design Film Festival 2015 | Oct. 13-18
The 7th edition of Architecture & Design Film Festival, celebrates the unique creative spirit that drives design. With a curated selection of over 25 films, 5 panels, book signings and a “Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality” lounge to experience new technology. ADFF creates an opportunity to entertain, engage and educate all types of people who are excited about architecture and design.
- AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Boat Tour | Oct. 18
Guided by AIANY Architecture Tour Committee members, this architecture boat tour circumnavigates Manhattan. Attendees take in the West Side's “starchitecture,” Lower Manhattan's Art Deco masterpieces and icons of the East River. These world famous monuments and more recent waterfront architecture are viewed in comfort and style from Classic Harbor Line's elegant yacht Manhattan.
- Eric Höweler and Meejin Yoon | Oct. 19
Boston-based architects Eric Höweler and Meejin Yoon present the work of their multidisciplinary practice, “operating in the space between architecture, art, and landscape,” and their conviction in “an embodied experience of architecture, seeing media as material and its effects as palpable elements of architectural speculation.” Response by Eric Bunge, Columbia GSAPP.
- Inside the Four Seasons and Other New York’s Landmarks Interiors | Oct. 20
We enjoy looking at historic interiors, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. Behind the walls, below the floors, and underneath the painted surfaces are the back-stories few people have heard about the city’s known and not-so-known landmarks. The authors of Interior Landmarks: Treasures of New York will take us behind the scenes of some of the City’s most interesting spaces.
- Urban Climate Adaptation – A Catalyst for Better, More Livable Cities? | Oct. 21
Climate change will continue to increase annual temperatures, levels of precipitation, and sea level in the next century. These climate trends increase the risks for cities around the world. New York City is no stranger to the devastating effects of climate change, and these risks have prompted investments to secure the future resiliency and sustainability of New York City’s people, economy, and infrastructure.
- MAS Summit for New York City | Oct. 22-23
The MAS Summit for New York City brings together influential urbanists and leaders to identify solutions to pressing urban challenges in New York and in urban centers around the world. Now in its sixth year, the MAS Summit promises to be an energetic two-day exploration of urban innovation and civic progress with presentations and panel discussions.
- Åzone Terminal Exhibition Opening | Oct. 23
As part of the Seaport Cultural District, the Guggenheim is installing a physical interface to its forthcoming online exhibition the Åzone Futures Market, a simulated marketplace for investing in futures that would have radical implications for our way of life. The project connects artists, architects, and theorists with the general public to make sense of the cultural effects of genetic and neuro hacking, computational super intelligence, extrastate citizenship, the extreme extension of the length of human life, and other futures that are threatening to emerge.
- Kids Workshop Experience In Architecture Design at the Queens Museum | Oct. 24
AIA Queens Chapter along with the Queens Museum will offer design education workshops on Saturday, October 24th from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm that are free with museum admission.
- Times Square: Contemporary Architecture in and around the “Crossroads of the World” | Oct. 24
Explore contemporary architecture in and around Times Square. Highlights include the Times Square Tower by David Childs of S.O.M., 4 Times Square by Fox + Fowle, Renzo Piano’s New York Times Tower, One Bryant Park/Bank Of America Tower by COOKFOX, Westin Hotel by Arquitectonica, the TKTS booth by Perkins Eastman, and the Snøhetta-designed Times Square pedestrian plaza.
