Carter B. Horsley criticized The New LaGuardia Airport: as being Not Functional, Not Inspiring, Not an Icon.
midlander countered "I'd love to see some plans - it's hard to figure out the scale of things or the circulation strategy from these little renderings...While I appreciate Horsley's criticism, he seems to be missing a sense of perspective on this. For example when he suggests adding a direct subway link to Manhattan would be an inconsequential couple million. Off by a factor of 5,000 or so I think."
J. MAYER H. founder Jürgen Mayer H., shared his list of places to see and places to eat at in Berlin. Stephanie Braconnier thought it was a "Sweet list" but warned "I wouldn't go to teufelsberg anymore unless you are willing to pay one of the scary thugs who hang around to let you in".
The Washington Post examined how Venice Beach's is grappling with a tech titan invasion. Thayer-D wrote "What's surprising is that it took this long. Not many beautiful and walkable parts of LA" while EKE was excited "My home town! It's becoming more and more sane and livable here, yet it still has an edge."
NCARB’s "Integrated Path" initiative, which works with architecture schools to develop programming that fulfills licensure’s requirements by graduation, recently approved plans from over a dozen schools hoping to get their students licensed. Rusty Long was "Very interested in the details of how these programs are structured" but wondered "What portion of the 3,740 IDP hours overlap the standard curriculum? How long would such an integrated path take, while still protecting public safety, health, and welfare of the American public? It seems unlikely that a typical 5 year B Arch program has the bandwidth to include anywhere near that many hours."
Zaha Hadid Architects has been announced as the winner of the Danjiang Bridge competition. trecaines noted it was "One of the few designs from Zaha Hadid that I actually admire."

Discussions/Threads
bowling_ball is "starting to debate the opportunities in front of me, even if they're still a few years away" and was looking for advice regarding Buying in to a firm. JonathanLivingston advised "I think it is almost always a bad deal. Architecture firms tend to not have much equity." Carrera pointed out "You don’t buy-in for an investment; you buy-in for control", mightyaa added "Whatever you do, be realistic. Don't expect you buying 5% of the company stock is going to get you much of a voice. It will however buy you job security from first round layoff's". 3tk saw a common thread "is the partnerships at the top - sole proprietorships seem harder to hand down in comparison to those that stick around for ages".
surixurient is back and started a thread to gather tips on "resources for the independent study of architecture". Responding to some commentators EKE argued "Of course you can learn to be a good architect without going to school. The way to do it is to go to work for a good architect for about ten years." A little later surixurient compiled a list of recommended books;
"Various textbooks and graphic standards
Dr Ching illustrated
Architectural Graphic Standards
Journal of Light Construction
ICC's international residential code
Frank Kidder Architect Builder's Pocketbook / Handbook
Parker-Ambrose Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders
The country builder's assistant by Asher Benjamin
the classical language of architecture by John summerson"
Finally, chark wanted to was looking for others to share their "funniest or most cringe-worthy" Architecture stories. Once JeromeS had a client meeting that turned into a snake hunt/execution. On a more light hearted note Miles Jaffe was once interviewed for a job, by Philip Johnson "dressed in his bathrobe, in the bedroom of his NYC apartment". Also, timothy sadler® relayed a story about a jobsite superintendent describing the plan to use "a regular dick-type vibrator" when talking about how to make sure concrete was settled.
Additionally
CityLab shared the news that the African American Student Union (AASU) of Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) will host The Black in Design Conference on its campus this October. Its website states, "serve as a call to action for the GSD to instill within each and every student who passes through its doors the responsibility to build just and equitable spaces at every scale."
