By the end of this year, some 20 million households in the U.S. will have some form of smart-home device, double the number in 2012 [...]
But some homeowners find themselves frustrated by the proliferation of smart-home technology. They complain of complex systems for once-simple tasks like turning on the light, “learning algorithms” that get their preferences wrong and systems that simply go on the fritz too often.

smart device noun An electronic device that can be remotely controlled by someone other than its end user.
I'm mainly shocked that everyone they interviewed lived in a 5,000sf+ house. Really? That's enormous.
this doesn't really mean smart homes are bad then, it means wealthy people are too stupid to maintain their own stuff.
Smart homes aren't bad and people who pass on this aren't stupid, but buying everything tech on faith that it will improve your quality of life is stupid... and it's all hackable. No thanks.
i can probably pick the cylinder lock on your front door easier than anyone could break the wpa password on your wifi, especially if you don't broadcast your ssid. your door could be kicked in faster than i could pick the lock too.
now if you think your front door keeps you secure while you don't understand how to set up a secure wifi, i'm not sure what to tell you. just be smarter. try harder. you're not any more vulnerable because there is a potential of hackers. it's just a bunch scare stories to scare old people who watch 60 minutes.
I think beyond hacking, it's the complexity of ever changing systems that many people find annoying. There are other cultural endeavors worth pursuing rather than the latest tech upgrade. BTW I hope as you age you stay as cool and cutting edge as you advertise.
What's an ssid?
service set identifier.
if you don't know what a key is, should you be using one for the lock on your front door?
if you don't know what key is, should you be relying on the lock to keep you protected?
thanks.
some of the systems use ipads or some other tablets as controls; when apple or android or amazon decides to update the os, there is 15 minutes where nothing works in the house.
Very impressive!
