Julia_Ingalls presented tips from firms about What should be in your portfolio. One common theme was that applicants aren't expected to tailor their work to the specific types of projects the firm undertakes. As Lorcan O’Herlihy explained "Don’t target work that mimics ours—we look for evidence of thoughtfulness about architecture, whether that’s demonstrated through research, entries into projects, or work at other firms".
News
Two pieces of good news for fans of historic preservation. First, New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected a plan which would have changed the interior of the Modernist (designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson in 1958) Four Seasons restaurant. Second, the LA City Council backed a plan to designate Norms restaurant (a rare example of Googie architecture) as a historic monument.
Mr_Wiggin rejoiced "it's disheartening to see a money-chasing developer messing with history. As a human being I say, payback's a bitch to those in the super-rich set".
Community College of Philadelphia won a $5.5MM lawsuit against Burt Hill Inc., now known as Stantec Architecture and Engineering LLC, for use of unlicensed architects. midlander was "cautiously glad to see the verdict in favor of the plaintiff. Architects get a lot of unfair blame for things outside their control. But one thing we can control is who performs the work we take on. Reputation is pretty much all a firm has got - don't sell it off."
The Independent highlighted new research out of England, that predicted the top ten most likely architectural advancements, in the next 100 years. Reacting to a number of commentors who pooh-poohed the "big-thinking utopian or futuristic speculations", davvid argued "Lefty architects should not retreat to some drum-circle somewhere and pretend that it isn't happening. We should be skeptical AND engaged, not cynically disengaged. Disengagement doesn't work".
Frank Lloyd Wright's La Miniatura finally sold in Pasadena. Miles Jaffe posted a link to some additional photos and pointed out the "Eastern influence visible". Then citizen shared a personal memory "used to live around the corner and for years the lot was very overgrown; that house in that yard looked just like the jungle/temple scenes in Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Archohm Studio in New Delhi, India by Archohm and Qualm HQ in Rozenburg, the Netherlands by Sputnik Architecture Urbanism Research are just two of the project featured in the latest Ten Top Images on Archinect's "Working Spaces" Pinterest Board.
Recently, Gregory-Fritz La Planche worked on his "Thesis Project At Cranbrook Academy of Art" and Mark Kammerbauer worked on "Preparing the REBUILD BY DESIGN MUNICH symposium and exhibition".

Students taking the IDS 420 Summer 2015 studio at UT Knoxville started a blog, which they will use to "post their responses to weekly Journal Assignments".
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Yokohama Port Terminal competition, SCI-Arc directors and faculty will join design faculty and theorists from the University of Tokyo, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, and Princeton University School of Architecture in a 2-day symposium. It will take place June 6-7, 2015 at the University of Tokyo.
Nicole Doan shared a short film, which may mark the end not only of the school year (and her last year in undergrad) but also the possible end to the end of semester, Cal Poly Pomona "dance video tradition".

Nick Weaver wanted to know Who's work are you currently interested in? Donna Sink acknowledge her list was "Somewhat more art than architecture". It ranged from Urbana/Rob Le and Johnsen Schmaling for the living, to Jože Plečnik if counting the dead. For his part Orhan Ayyüce is "interested working with and producing projects for the Assembly". Chris Teeter added David Chipperfield, Ando and Holl.
Larchinect is "contemplating expanding or moving our landscape architecture practice to the SLC area" and curious to hear Nectors thoughts. Although some initial commentator suggested lack of affiliation with the LDS Church would make it hard to get work, Everyday Intern suggested otherwise, pointing out that "Less than 50% of SLC residents are Mormon ... and shrinking" but also acknowledged "There is a lot of built-in networking that occurs because of the church". Anyone else want to weigh in?
Finally inspired by the recent "OMA BIG HWKN topic", Kozumelle started a thread to report intern and entry level US wages and start a petition? kickrocks argued "If you're serious about anything, do it offline. No one responds to anonymous emails and reports because then anyone can file a claim" Meanwhile archanonymous was reminded of http://www.architecture-lobby.org/ "Ridiculously naive, lacking life experience, but idealistic and smart". Lian Chikako Chang thought Archinect's Salary Poll might be a good tool for submitting the data "so that it can be aggregated. The only thing it's missing, if you want it, is a spot to enter the name of the firm".
