- The world lost visionary Frei Otto and his death moved up the announcement of his winning the 2015 Pritzker Prize. Plus, the renowned Michael Graves died and his firm promised to "continue to honor Michael’s humanistic design philosophy".
While EKE thought Otto was "a spectacular choice. Bravo.", Eric Chavkin noted "Frei Otto's work inspired Glen Small's BIOMORPHIC BIOSPHERE and much of early SCI_Arc student work". RJ Magoon also opined "No matter your opinion on the man or his work, it's hard to deny Graves' enormous influence on the practice and education in the last quarter of the Twentieth Century".
Ayesha Ghosh reported in from the first of the Architectural League of New York 2015 Emerging Voices lecture series, with firms Aranda\Lasch and MANUEL CERVANTES CESPEDES / CC ARQUITECTOS. There Aranda claimed "we like the idea of being ruiners" and Manuel Cervantes Cespedes talked about TODs in Mexico City and "the desires of unknown tenants".
David Chipperfield Architects was selected to lead the redesign of The Met's Southwest Wing for Modern and Contemporary Art. Dimitri Damiel Kim complained "Why can't we ever compete for public projects in this country?...This was in no way, blind, design merit based competition like they do in Europe and in China. Someone else's taste and preference was used to choose the handful of architects they invited".
The Society for Beautifying the City of Wrocław (TUMW) and Fundacja Transformator have filed a motion, to include PoMo gem Solpol department store in Wrocław, on a list of protected monuments. Reacting to all the negative commentary, Donna Sink praised the words of Agata Gabiś
"This is lovely and accurate. We have to decide which buildings were important signposts or turning points in architectural history, and which were just copying trends, but tossing out the important ones because we don't, today, like how they look is silly and shortsighted".
Firms/Work Updates
The last time Yelta Köm posted on his blog nosyopsis was in December 2013. However his latest post about Taksim Square, more than makes up for the absence. In the post he insists "on Taksim as a narrative of multiplicity and of plurality" and laments for the future of the Atatürk Cultural Centre and Gezi Park.
Goettsch Partners (GP) publicized the news, that they have been retained to design a new Class A office development project located in Warsaw, Poland.
Recently, Elliot Lazarus worked on a "floating bookcase" while Dave Tran worked on "research on spiritual design in healthcare facilities".

Students from UMSoA built seven of the architectural models for the MoMA exhibit ‘Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955-1980’. Apparently using digital fabrication techniques.
Cal Poly Pomona Dept. of Architecture put out an open invite, to join them for a juried exhibition of the best student work from winter quarter 2015, on April 1st.
Over at the SARUP affiliated blog, snatraj highlighted the work of students from Assistant Prof. Jasmine Benyamin’ studio ARCH 615/815, Cinematic Architecture. The "intent was to re-present their perception of the building as a series of space/time interfaces".
