The Emerald Necklace Expanded Vision plan, a multi-partner visionary project spearheaded by Amigos de los Rios and the Conservation Fund, aims to connect the forests of the San Gabriel mountain range with the waters of the Pacific through a network of public park space, bike and walking trails, and restored waterways. It’s an ambitious plan that will require coordination of the 88 cities and and dozens of public agencies in the L.A. Basin to achieve. — nextcity.org

All in Los Angeles owes a thanks to Susan Nelson who initiated all this years ago. I co-taught a studio with her at SCI_Arc back wnen SCI-Ars was cutting edge enviromental. . Shigero Ban, Thom Mayne, Eric Moss, Glen Small... The work of Susan Nelson is SCI-Arc's greatest legacy.
Let's see if we can get it done this time around. It's the Olmsteds and Harland Bartholomew, for pete's sake.
That plan called for a new state-level authority with taxation powers, to trump the troubles of coordinating the (now) 88 stakeholder municipalities. I hope this park system gets implemented, even in part.

Susan taught environmental planning at SCI-ARC and she walke her taik as they say. Her approach was as an activist and community organizer. She was a lot of fun.
eric it was too strange recently i was talking to someone who champions herself as one of the leading advocates of open space in los angeles didn't know susan. it was sad and also telling how grabby people get these days claiming titles they don't deserve. i think the last time i saw susan when you and i visited her in her house which was two houses up from mine in echo park. she and michael black had a big influence on me as a student.
Sad yes, Parks people know her. Conservationists know. Community organizers that have been around the block knew her. The LA City council knew her for sure. She went over EIRs ad challanged them, and turned them right back against the development; Her tactic was to proposed alternate green designs that eventually changed the design for the better.
