:Located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, this library flanks the southern edge of the town square – a void of parking lot – a public square for cars. In an effort to strengthen Bryn Mawr’s core and activate a static downtown, my design attempts to push the limits of the library as public domain. Using section to interlock building and ground, two essential community spaces – library and park – are fused into one parcel of land. Both programs work in a symbiotic relationship - the park creating spaces to extend the library outdoors – the library allowing for a series of terraced spaces to craft multiple park experiences. The library takes the form of a slice of earth emerging from its place in the ground. Fragments of this “ground” are then carved from the solid – crafting threshold, entry, and fenestration. Interior space follows this same logic as large atria are hollowed out from dense program. This system od solid and void echoes to the landscape – sculpted as a canyon of urban green space, anchoring the town center as community-owned - democratic - open to all.
