This free-standing mansion is located on the wide, stately Maliebaan in Utrecht. Once a dwelling, and now an office, it has been restored and extended, without intruding on the surroundings. Built at the end of the nineteenth century, and designed by architect, SJ de Rooy, it was the inspiration behind the choice of sustainability as the theme for the conversion and extension.
The original intention of the structure is brought into play and new life is breathed into it. On the outside some embellishments were removed, and the low ceilings and other unattractive results of fifty years of office use were discarded from the interior, leaving only the shell.
The structural alterations were carried out to enable this urban villa to again be used as a residence, and the garden is treated with similar respect. The structure can once more accommodate different generations of users and trends in architecture and interior design.
