Quarry Homes

Drawing inspiration from a local quarry, the concept of this multifamily project revolves around subtractive carvings of stone. Surrounded by the sprawling uniformity of inland suburbia, the design team sought to anchor the project into the landscape of the dramatic hillside.  Further breaking with tradition, the master plan of this development rejects the linear “row” approach, and instead accentuates clusters of units organized around courtyards and green spaces.

In each unit, subterranean courtyards are carved out of the earth, strategically disconnecting vehicular traffic from pedestrian walkways and porches. This split level approach allows first floor living rooms to seamlessly flow into green spaces. Additional pocket gardens sit adjacent to the dining and kitchen spaces, creating varied views and a dynamic connection with nature. The units culminate in private, roof decks that embody the shifted outlook of a divergent approach to multifamily design.
