SHoP Architects is an acclaimed architecture firm striving for innovation in the design and delivery of ambitious projects around the world. We are seeking a talented Architect with experience in Enclosure Design to join our team in lower Manhattan. This position will support the design and execution of key design projects with a focus on the scope of Enclosure Design and Execution. The position will be required to work closely with project teams and specialists to design, coordinate, and document custom enclosure systems, and in later phases respond to RFIs, Submittals, and conduct on-site reviews. Candidates must exhibit a strength and interest in managing complex design variables while coordinating with outside consultants, contractors, and other collaborators. 

Skills + Experience/

Design

  • Develop design studies, diagrams, and precedent research as part of a project team, while guiding and collaborating with junior staff.
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for analytical problem solving.
  • Research and report on new technologies, materials, and building systems with a focus on enclosure design
  • Possess working knowledge of, and curiosity for: building materials, system detailing, construction techniques, and building codes.
  • Explore system and material assemblies through model making and full-scale prototyping.

 Presentation & Communication

  • Support the production of presentations internally. Discuss project design ideas within your team, and in review settings with Principals. 
  • Develop and further curate the project narrative. Present design ideas to clients and other external project team members & contractor team
  • Coordinate and prepare project correspondence.

Documentation

  • Initiate and lead the documentation of project enclosure systems in collaboration with project leadership and directors, while guiding the efforts of more junior staff.
  • Set up meetings with advisors and/or peers to review project documentation.
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for enclosure design concepts and detailing of custom material assemblies.
  • Demonstrate a strong proficiency in Rhino and Revit for design and the production of architectural drawing sets.

Coordination

  • Incorporate input from the project team, contractor, and client into the design.
  • Communicate and coordinate the project design directly with consultants and contractors. Guide the broader team towards solutions that align with the overall project design intent.
  • Possess experience collaborating with fabricators and building relationships.

Team & Project Management

  • Manage and complete tasks that have been delegated to you by your project team and know when to ask and raise questions.
  • Manage and supervise junior members of your project team. Delegate design and drawing tasks to junior members of your project team.
  • Initiate design, research, and development related to assigned tasks that augment or advance the direction given by the Project Team.
  • Demonstrate and ability to prioritize when given a list of simultaneous time sensitive tasks by both Team and Client, properly planning work that needs to be completed against project timelines.

Construction Administration

  • Initiate and complete RFI responses, submittal reviews, and produce design sketches.
  • Participate in consultant coordination both in the office and during site visits and meetings. 
  • Be able to leverage material and system research to problem solve and recognize when reviewing and answering questions when code and zoning issues will need to be addressed. 
  • Be able to perform site visits and produce required field reports.

Collaboration

  • Desire to participate in office-wide initiatives related to Enclosure Design research and education.
  • Collaborates with team leaders on team activities and provides mentorship to designers. 
  • Contributes to feelings of safety within their team and is a positive ambassador of SHoP. 

Qualifications/
• 3 years minimum professional experience
• Completion of five-year architectural undergraduate professional  degree or an architectural master’s degree.
