The Director of Space Planning is responsible for the management and oversight of strategic space planning initiatives. This position will oversee campus master planning and space utilization efforts as well as leading efforts to define space and design standards. The position will also be responsible for supervising the Assistant Director of Space Planning and reports to the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements strategies that engages the University community in building a culture of planning in facilities and campus development, with emphasis on long-range strategic planning, master planning, and measurement of performance.
  • Defines and executes space planning policies and management to ensure space strategy is aligned with University pedagogy.
  • Work collaboratively with academic and administrative constituencies to understand organizational functionality, space utilization needs, and plans for future development
  • Work collaboratively with offices responsible for scheduling space to achieve the greatest possible level of space use efficiency, accounting for growth or changes in student enrolment and staffing
  • Manages and coordinates planning and feasibility studies including preparing program information, coordinating work of interdepartmental groups, and working with relevant stakeholders. Manages vendors supporting these efforts where required.
  • Prepare drawings, graphs, photographs and other applicable materials to test the fit of proposed moves, reconfigurations and furnishing, and to illustrate planning objectives and options
  • Provide detailed and comprehensive documentation and analysis of the University’s space resources
  • Work closely with the Director of Design and Construction to develop scopes of work based on the needs identified in the space planning process.
  • Develop and maintains space management software (Serraview) functionality
  • Works to incorporate sustainability standards into the space planning process
  • Participates and supports the activities and processes of the Space Governance Committee.
  • Participate in the capital improvement planning processes as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • A degree in architecture, engineering , construction management or interior design
  • 5-10 years of experience in space planning, architecture, construction, or a similar field
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, continually adapting work environment,
  • Experience with various AutoCAD and Adobe software programs
  • Strong leadership capability, and ability to effectively translate plans into tangible, achievable goals.
  • Anticipates and effectively handles change; demonstrates willingness to try new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.
  • COVID Policy Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional license
  • Direct experience in higher education architecture and planning
  • Experience with Serraview software
