The Bryant Park Corporation and the 34th Street Partnership, two leading Business Improvement Districts (non-profit public-private organizations) in Manhattan, New York, are looking for a Junior Architect (JA) to join their award-winning in-house capital projects and urban design team. They will be primarily responsible for assisting with research, planning, presentation, design, and execution of urban, public space, and architectural projects. They will join a multidisciplinary team that includes professionals with backgrounds in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and graphic design; and work within an office that includes departments of Capital Projects, Events, Horticulture, Information Technology, Sanitation, Operations, Retail and Visitor Services, Security, and Digital Media. This is a full time in-person (not remote) position starting in July 2021.


Responsibilities (included but not limited to)

  • Reports directly to Director of Urban Design and Vice President of Capital Projects and works with interdisciplinary teams on projects as required.
  • Creates and assists with the design and implementation of architectural renovations, events and programs, furniture for parks, park and plaza design, street furniture, and other public space and architectural projects.
  • Creates and assists with renderings and photo simulations for various projects to help staff and others visualize urban design projects.
  • Creates and assists with print and digital presentations for internal and external design meetings and New York City agency submissions.
  • Undertakes observation, site visits, assists with construction supervision, and takes photographs and measurements.
  • Performs field and online research.
  • Creates and assists in the design of graphics for sign systems, environmental graphic elements for urban design projects.

  • The applicant must have an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited design program. Applicable programs include architecture, industrial design, landscape architecture, or urban design.
  • Experience producing construction documents and managing projects with an architecture, industrial design, landscape architecture, or urban design firm.
  • Applicant should demonstrate an interest in urban design, public spaces and parks.
  • Proficient in 3D design visualization and execution.
  • Proficient in environmental and print graphic design; has knowledge of basic visual design principles such as typography, composition, form, and color; visual problem solving; digital design; information architecture.
  • Self-motivated, organized, practical, and detail oriented.
  • Able to work on several projects at a time, quickly and accurately. Works well with tight and/or overlapping deadlines.
  • Skilled in design software applications, required: AutoCAD 2019 and Rhino 6; latest versions of Adobe CC: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop; Microsoft Office 365: PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel. Primarily a PC-based office though cross-platform flexibility is a plus.
  • Has good outdoor and indoor/studio photography skills.
  • Must have the ability to listen, follow direction, be responsive to change and feedback and have a willingness to collaborate with all the designers on the team; and must be comfortable working directly with members of other departments.
  • Proactive, brings a curiosity and his/her own ideas; contributes to group discussion.
  • Has a desire to learn and work in a collaborative design environment.
  • Must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States.
