Firm Overview:

A+I is an award-winning, strategy-led design agency focusing on design in the built environment. We live our purpose through our devotion to crafting more compelling human experience that seeks to unite people and organizations, amplify their purpose, and better the world we inhabit. We believe that strategic design of spaces is a powerful means of achieving the greater goals of those for whom we design. As such, building beautiful, meaningful, and purposeful spatial experiences is deeply dependent on the strategies that organize that thinking. We achieve this through deeply collaborative creative teams, integrated across research and design disciplines, and aligned around our client’s vision.

Position Overview:

Director of Project Strategy.  As a key member of the A+I design process, you will work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer as well as Studio Directors, Project leaders, and Project teams to direct the development, communication, and delivery of design strategy across all projects. You will provide leadership necessary to design the ideas and arguments within projects that inform the architectural planning and design process, and work collaboratively with peers to message and implement them through design.  As Strategy is a growing discipline at A+I, the Director of Project Strategy is a player/coach role; you must feel as comfortable engaging with project work directly as managing individuals and teams.

Reports to: Chief Strategy Officer

Manages: The Director of Project Strategy directly manages and mentors the cohort of strategists at A+I.  Strategy and narrative work is managed through a matrix structure.  Strategists typically span several projects that sit within one of three studios. Their work on client projects is in collaboration with teams under the direction of that group's Studio Director.  Their mentoring, growth, and support as a strategist is overseen by the Director of Project Strategy.

Creates impact by:

  • Connecting Studio Directors and their teams with:
    • Shepherding research processes that are both quantitative and qualitative, including: designing surveys, conducting interviews, observing clients’ operations and spaces, and conducting workshops and client review engagements.
    • Analysis and synthesis of gathered information, and the concise representation of the information into compelling direction for the design of experiences in built, virtual, and branded space.
    • Collaborating on building compelling graphic and verbal narratives that inspire and coordinate the efforts of teams, consultants, and engage clients in the project’s goals and ambitions.
    • Ongoing support for design teams to refine and reinforce the strategic underpinnings of design work
  • Managing the operations side of strategy, including regular review of team staffing requirements as well as advisement on and involvement in the hiring of staff strategists.
  • Supporting the Chief Strategy Officer in developing A+I’s position as a thought leader in the industry by:
    • Working as a strategy team to build new strategic tools and methodologies to drive innovation and discovery through design projects.
    • Assisting in the research and authoring of occasional white papers or other strategic written work on behalf of the firm.  Edit and support when authorship is by others.
    • Occasionally attending conferences, panel discussions, or other relevant external events
    • Supporting the Co-Founders as the lead evangelists of the firm through materials and message
  • A deep curiosity in people, what moves and motivates them, and how space and designed experiences can meaningfully support and help their organizations realize goals.
  • A passion for exploring the overlap between architectural design, experience, brand and culture, and strategic thinking.
  • A background in architectural design or closely related design field is required.
  • A background in statistics, social or environmental research, or scientific research work is helpful, but not required
  • An ambition to lead a best-in-class operation
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Strong written, verbal, and graphic communication skills
  • Captivating storytelling and narrative techniques to connect clients’ discovered needs and aspirations with thoughtful strategic direction
  • Comfort communicating with client at the highest stakeholder levels
  • Proficiency in the usual software suspects:  Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), AutoCAD & Revit = a plus
  • Ability to work independently, but true belief in the power of collaboration
  • Strong ability and desire to work proactively and take initiative to accomplish tasks and anticipate next steps
  • Ability to lead teams and inspire others towards excellence.
  • This is a leadership position. The ideal candidate will have a commensurate level of experience at a design agency, architecture firm, strategic consulting agency, or design-adjacent business.
  • A+I’s future vision is to be recognized as a preeminent strategic design practice, leaning heavily into strategic engagements that are modeled more on a consultancy than on a traditional architecture firm.
  • The growth of the Strategic services team is critical to the success of all design across the office.  As we start realizing successful progress toward these goals, there will be tangible opportunities to grow the size and diversity of the Strategy Team, and thus evolve the Director role into an increasingly managerial position.  The opportunity of the Director position is ultimately not just supporting the evolution of the firm, but ultimately helping to develop and guide it.  With this evolution would come commensurate growth in position / title, leadership, and compensation.
