The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) is seeking candidates for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Architecture and Urban Design to begin July 1, 2020. A Master's Degree in Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture, or the equivalent professional degree is required. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to advancing the field through teaching, practice, and research. Professional, research, and teaching experience is required. Candidates will show clear evidence of expertise and have strong leadership and communication skills. They must have demonstrated capacity for original work and show promise of significant continuing contributions.

Founded in 1881, GSAPP currently offers advanced degrees in Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Historic Preservation, Real Estate Development, and Critical, Curatorial, and Conceptual Practices and has over 700 degree students representing more than 50 countries. The Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design (MSAUD) program at GSAPP is a one-year (three semester) post-professional degree program which challenges students to think critically about the future of urbanism and to investigate and design scenarios for local, regional, and global change through studios, required seminars, and electives. The program frames urban design as an inclusive, activist, tools-based practice for specific sites and communities; a representational strategy for teasing out stories and histories that shape shared understandings of place; and a critical engagement with collective form, space, and experience.

GSAPP seeks candidates whose emphasis is on practice and design research in the fields of architecture and urban design and who show, through research and projects, excellence in environmental and spatial design that engages the complex experiences, materials, or infrastructures that shape - and are shaped by - cities or regions. A clear record of significant professional achievement and/or academic experience is required: candidates must demonstrate innovative research, writing, and/or projects through publications, exhibitions, conferences, commissioned reports or studies, and/or executed or proposed built works. Successful tenure and tenure-track candidates will be those who are scholars and/or practitioners engaged in exceptional scholarship and/or research through their practice (i.e. engage in practice as a form of research). Senior positions require extensive teaching experience and a substantial body of scholarship and/or research practice.  Applicants to junior positions in the tenure-track category must show evidence of great promise in scholarship, practice, and research as well as teaching. Responsibilities include teaching and research. For all positions administrative responsibilities include committee work, faculty meetings, and student advising.

GSAPP faculty should innovate their disciplines and enable students to be educated in current and past ideas and methods, as well as support students’ explorations and testing of new ideas. Therefore, preference will generally be given to candidates who are able to teach and/or conduct research in both traditional fields and in an emergent specialization.
