it seems that you are AP'd. on their school website, Princeton writes about the 3 years long Marc.1, and also mentions that people with 4 year bachelors in architecture, the equivalent of..6 terms of studio and some other stuff (check it out there), are eligible for AP. (that's my education situation)

now..did you specifically request for it?
cuz i didn't, but yet again, i still have to wait for the letter. same thing: my parent's house, just uptown toronto. gotta get lazy dad to check the mail every 5 minutes. lol

as for open house. i am seriously intending to come down there, since i wanna check out Columbia and yale as well. ( although i am very close to not considering Columbia for various reasons)

one professor last year said if he wrote me a letter it would be "luke warm" and only the first half of my studio with him was good. lol but luckily i had a backup. that semester wasn't my best as far as studio goes...

what does AP standing means?

advanced placement

u get in ap if u have significant past experience that may overlap with some of their classes, and it usually means u get to cut some classes out of ur schedule and finish ahead of time

Most of the opinions on this thread seem fairly researched, I'm just curious to hear any thoughts comparing UCLA v USC. I've spoken with a few professors, but it seems pretty biased. Maybe a more current, informed discussion might be helpful.

ok, so since we're on this topic and we're amongst friends here, i'll go ahead and share one of the most hurtful emails i have ever received in life. so i'm a little dramatic!

i consider myself to be a very open person, and by sharing this, i hope that everyone perseveres to keep their dreams alive. because as vindictive as this email was, it didn't stop me... and nothing should stop you my comrades!

here's the copy and paste response from an instructor i approached for a letter of rec:

Hey Bird, sorry for not getting back sooner. I wish I could help you out but I'm already on the hook to write 3 rec letters for the class. As you can imagine, I can't write a supportive letter for everyone that asks and I have already had to turn down a few of your classmates. While I found your work to be satisfactory it didn't blow me away. More importantly, I didn't see that spark of passion for the work that is really demanded in design centric education. I'm not discouraging you from applying but I would suggest you take a minute to reflect on your motives and desires for pursuing this degree.

for anyone who has been to an open house for a grad school before can I ask what they are like. I mean I get the overall idea, walk around see projects listen to people talk etc...

The reason why I ask is because I will be attending the UMich open house next weekend, and I am driving the 8 hours there (it would take longer to get to the airport and fly from where I live). My parents house is on the way so I was going to stop by, and then they suggested they would just come with me.

Im all for having them along cause who wants to drive for that long by themselves I just don't want them to be bored at the open house. Im sure they are all for listening about the program but I cant imagine there will be a whole lot of other peoples parents around (Im sure I will also be younger then most, as im only 23).

Anyone have any thoughts to this?

Sorry for the late replay, but I am a VT alum (undergrad). I try to ignore this thread (as much as possible) and then when I do check-in, two more pages have already been written...

Anyways, I am very happy with my time spent at VT. There is a great mix of both the theory and 'real' building both in the overall program as well as the individual professors. You will learn who is who and can shape your experience based on who is more theoretical, more practical, etc. based on your interests. I ended up choosing professors that had opposite interests/strengths than me most of the time which made my time at VT more balanced, at least I tend to think so. There is constant cross-pollination of teachers and classes with the undergrad and grad programs, but they are kept more or less separate.

The school seems to have prepped me for the professional world as good as I could have hoped - though I feel all schools could focus on this more. For what its worth, most friends from the program are still employed at their respective firms in this economy - tho I realize the current downturn has affected everyone no matter their skill set and experience,

The study abroad experiences are exceptional. The major weakness when I was there was the ability of the program to adopt and promote the computer as a necessary tool - but I have heard this has been more or less remedied?

Blacksburg is small, middle-of-nowhere, and not near a major airport... and somehow awesome. Rent is cheap. Real cheap.

And yes, the undergrads believe they are better off than the grads, but you would probably get the reverse from the grad students - internal competition is not necessarily a bad thing...

In the end, there are a lot of good schools out there. Good luck in your decision.

mugged_ should be fine. i wouldn't be surprised to see other parents there, though were probably won't be a whole lot of them.

i'm dragging my sister along with me. all in all, i think they would want to see what you'd be up to if you ended up at u of mich. my sister is begging me not to leave cali. the only way that will happen is if i get in to berkeley. she's gradauted from cal.

damn bird, that's sum bs.. not a very tactful email at all, sounds like a very pretentious prof. maybe it was for the better, impressing these types of people isnt all it's cracked up to be. plus, it seems like you proved him wrong by getting into a very "design centric" program. 'eff em.

thanks, alex. he was a jerk of all jerks. we pretty much hated each other. he'd make me feel stupid. i'd make him feel stupid. the dislike was mutual. it was probably my dumbass fault for even asking him for a letter. you live, you learn... i hope. i have to say, it burned a little, even coming from a person who's opinion i don't respect much. i digress...

ugh. well sadly we're all going to have to get used to that. at least when I was in undergrad it was a 50/50 ratio of assholes to genuine individuals when it comes to faculty.

Don't let that professor get to you. Most professors spend very little time in studio with their students and have no idea of the students passions, dreams, and abilities except for the drawings they see on a large piece of paper at the end of the semester. If a professor doesn't want to write you a letter its not because he doesn't think you have a good shot by yourself, its probably because he isn't confident that he will get you into your dream school. (professors are scared to take risks, the students are not)

subliminal, many thanks for a comprehensive overview. not a bad thing to be actually 'prepared' for the professional world. it's so easy to get wrapped up in the 'who's published' or 'who's who' and forget what most of us are ultimately in school to do. get a masters, get a license. practice this thing we've all been after for so long. and without destroying our financial credit for the rest of our lives.

No problem. I think this is where this thread has merit - being able to openly discuss programs and our thoughts about them (and the admission process that gets us there). As for the thousand "what do you think I should do" "make a decision for me" posts, eh, not so much...

one of my profs had to do up to 15 and was still very happy to do mine (it was sent late but nonetheless received by all) - on the hook for 3 is no comparison this guy sounds like a jerk

So, I talked to some professors at Berkeley, applicants are up 10% from last year, which was 900, so this year they are pushing 100, probably with the same amount of slots, drop that rate down to 4.2% good luck

I had this studio professor who just didn't like me for some reason. I would come up to him with ideas about my project and he would just put me down and stop me from pursuing interesting ideas and basically hinted that I should just not even try. And then, the professor would single me out in crits and mortify me by saying my project was cartoonish. I felt like a cartoon in his studio... I never asked him for a recommendation, because he'd probably reply the way your professor did.

I just got recommendation from professors I was on good terms with.

Signs of friendly professors: they say hi and ask how you're doing and encourage you.

word2bird - At least the instructor sent that bs to you and not out to the admissions committees!!

my mom offered to go to the RISD open house with me as well- she doesnt live close at all, but we do have family around there.
And dont worry about being the baby, that would be me. I am just shy of 22.

thevillian: i talked to sarah whiting yesterday, and shes calling people this week. she told me that Rice MArch Post-Prof (option 3) only accepted 7 people, but i dont know about the other options.

thanks for the encouragement, ya'll. it wasn't a big deal, and it definitely wasn't going to stop me and it hasn't. i never should have asked, so that part was absolutely my bad. though i know for a fact that other instructors wrote letters for close to 20 students if not more without bitching about it, so yeah... i just know that others have probably been discouraged by profs, instructors, parents, friends, whomevs. i can't have been the only one... and the imporant thing is that we keep on trucking.

moving on, there's a bunch of youngins here, i'm probably going to be a grandma at 28 and starting an m. arch program.

berkeley needs to hurry up and decide. i feel like a bunch of people are waiting on them... i'm about ready to send u of mich my deposit and call it a day. or 3.5 years!

I'm assuming that UT is University of Texas? I haven't heard any news from UBC either and am starting to get discouraged. Congratulations on your acceptance to Oregon though. Hopefully I will be just as lucky and receive an acceptance from one of the other schools I've applied to.
