questions to those admitted to berkeley:
1) what time did you get the email from sara today, wed- 3/17
2) what was the phrasing in the attached letter signed by jill stoner about the fellowship, scholarship, funding...you know the $$$
mine said "Because we very much want you to make Berkeley your choice for graduate study, we would like to nominate you for the prestigious Graduate Opportunity Program Fellowship, which covers all fees and tuition and provides a $10,000 stipend for the 2010-2011 academic year."
this is killing me...is my tuition going to be paid for + i'll be getting some mula or what? i need clarification asap!
bird:
1) email time: 6:06 pm (got a text from another fellowship recipient, checked my email in calculus class... couldn't sit still for the next hour)
2) second paragraph after some application, portfolio, past achievement praise: "We would like to offer you the first ever "[IN]Architecture Fellowship" of $xx,xxx and hope that you will make Berkeley your choice for graduate study."
I wish it were renewable, but it doesn't seem like it. I think you got a different one.
bird. thanks a lot for you comments! :)
About tcaup. Its a great school, though i might say somewhat different since i went. Monica PdL has really done some rewiring to the program especially in terms of funds and technology (and she has brought a lot of gsd people as well.) The grad program was/is great, flexible in some ways and heavy on theory on others. i would also call it a rhino grad school. You should check out their open house since they can pay you up to 300. Its worth a visit.
just wondering if one should hold out any hope for Pratt, UIC, Parsons, and RISD. Especially Pratt, since it seems that a few people have heard back. Is the official final date April 1st? Or is that the date they will be sending out rejections. Thanks for any info on this matter
Congrats on all the acceptances, and good luck to all those still waiting.
Meat, if we knew if we should lose hope over not hearing from schools I don't think this thread would be nearly as long. There's no way to tell what silence means.
Mambo, I believe they just throw them all together and rifle through them. That's why schools ask for specific information on the cover so they can sort them back into your file when they're done. I remember seeing file boxes of portfolios at my undergrad school sorted by which program they applied to but not much else...
But it may depend on the school.
word2bird, What I think is the money is actually handled by the university's graduate college thing but the departments nominate the students they want to receive them, and it gets processed by the university. So by "nominate" they mean "the university's grad office has to look it over first".
my stats are (stalker alert):
.23/white/female
.graduated May '09 with a BDes from UF
GPA: 3.14 overall for undergrad
.will graduate August '09 with a grad certificate in urban planning from UCF
GPA: 4.0
.GRE: 1140? 1170?
.Portfolio: I'll post it on issuu later maybe. I don't have acrobat at home to edit my pdf version.
Schools:
Clemson - In
ASU - In
Minnesota - In
UNCC - In (+ $$)
UPenn - ?
UF - ?
SCAD - ?
UTSA - ?
Does anyone know anything about the UT San Antonio program? I saw some grad projects and syllabi (syllabuses?) on their website and really liked it and San Antonio is a neat city but... all I see anything about is Arlington & Austin.
Li dandan..you have some really nice work in there. I think you'll get into upenn. Right out of undergrad my portfolio was a cluttered mess, so it's really impressive that yours is so clean and succinct.
@bird: wow, I'm still so amazed you got that.. you should really be proud! The way I read 'nominate' is that you've got it barring things like your denial of the acceptance offer, or any other administrative stuff that might get in the way.
@mitboi: I did. There were no dimensional reqs, just dpi, so I submitted as 1 spread=1 page. worked out perfectly because my hard copy portfolio was roughly 40 pages.
@thevillain, I think there is a page size restriction..
"Applicants must submit their portfolios digitally. One PDF document of no more than twenty pages (maximum page size 10 x 12"), no more than 25 MB, and screen resolution 72 dpi should be submitted on a CD that has been tested on both Mac OSX and Windows."
@mitboi: I also adjusted my spreads to be a single page each. I think I had around 25 pages at that point. I talked to Joan about it before hand and she said you could submit more pages, but there was no guarantee that the admission committee would look at anything past 20. I'd image if they like the first 20 pages then they wouldn't stop looking...
hm, maybe that was Berkeley I was thinking of then. at any rate, I think I resized/formatted them as 'min-spreads' and made it work. I remember freaking out about it at first, but finding a way to make it work.
yes i did mitboi. It is a really dumb requirement it really messes up the portfolios.
but i also included a full version of my portfolio on the disc... :)
pssst villain:
"Applicants must submit their portfolios digitally. One PDF document of no more than twenty pages (maximum page size 10 x 12"), no more than 25 MB, and screen resolution 72 dpi should be submitted on a CD that has been tested on both Mac OSX and Windows. No fewer than four projects should be included."
misinformation, apologies. It's hard to keep track of the various reqs. for each school. I know when I did each I reread the instructions roughly 56 times before I submitted, then upon completion cleansed my mind of such stuff with fresh air and booze. forgive my inability to recollect.
So I thought I'd demonstrate mainly my drawing / painting skills. As my architecture prof for a course said that very few students could draw these days, I thought my portfolio would be different from those of an arch student. I was hoping this difference would pay off. But doesn't seem too likely now. I will try again next year.
I am thinking that I am missing the 3D component that everyone have in their portfolios but I've no idea how to approach it.
Thanks in advance guys and congrats to everyone with their acceptances. :)
RedMeat...I too am waiting for Pratt and am thinking it isnt great news. I emailed them asking if we hadn't heard if that meant rejection. I got a promising/confusing email back. They said they hadn't notified anyone (uh...yeah you have) and that they are not done with the review process.
I am certainly not holding out hope.
As for Parsons it seems they are slowly trickling out acceptances as they go...GOOD LUCK!
@ mitboi: You seem very talented and very artistic. You should try to include some sculpture to let the juries know you think spatially and are good a crafting/making things. I love the way you show the process of some of the drawings/paintings - you should do more of this b/c it shows the way you think and work.
Jaded- I was accepted. I only have about 2 years work experience but 1 of it is due to 3 co-ops. I graduated last year from Wentworth Institute of Technology.
- Father, i'm a 70 year old man, and last night i went out for St Pattys, got really hammered, and this morning i found two under age girls in my bed whom I slept with after the party.
The priest coughs obviously disturbed
- My son, this is such a serious sin. When was last time you confessed?
i think it's obvious within 3 pages that "damn, this guy can draw/paint/whatever."
i found myself getting slightly bored by the end of it... i mean, your talent was already proven. Everything was uniformally exquisite.
What I was missing, though, was the PROBLEM-SOLVING aspect of architecture.
so, in my mind there's no doubt you're artistic- in fact, it's up there with the best art I've seen on this thread.
however, the process-based 'how do i solve this'? was missing for me.
if you don't get in, maybe do a summer program?
OR-
just hire yourself out as an illustrator, you're talented enough to free-lance in that without going to grad school.
A student comes to a young professor's office hours. She glances down the hall, closes his door, kneels pleadingly. "I would do anything to pass this exam." She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, gazes meaningfully into his eyes. "I mean..." she whispers, "... I would do... anything."
He returns her gaze. "Anything?"
"Anything."
His voice turns to a whisper. "Would you... study?"
this is great, it lets me know my portfolio was not a COMPLETE failure. (Just... uh... an in-between one?)

Dear XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:
The Graduate Admission Committee of the School of Architecture has completed a very careful evaluation of your application and has elected not to offer you admission at this time. However, a small group of applications, including yours, received sufficient support to warrant establishing a waiting list. You should know that competition for the few positions (12) available was considerable this year, as we had a total of 287 applicants.
If you wish to remain on our waiting list for further consideration, you must notify us before 1 April 2010. We anticipate acting on the waiting list soon after 15 April 2010. We very much appreciate your interest in the School of Architecture.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!

Does anyone know about wether incoming MArch students are required to take the summer foundation courses at RISD?
He uses the vacuum reference twice and there are some errors in the last paragraph. Just a little repetitive but overall well articulated.
I visited MIT in the fall; now I want to check out the Yale open house. Any one else going?

I was told earlier this year that I should try to win money for arch. school by competing in a Miss America regional/state pageant...
I thought that was a joke, until I actually looked it up. The prizes (even for just placing) really are little scholarships. Who knew?
In what order do admissions committees typically look at portfolios? Or is it just random? Anyone with any inside knowledge on this?

Berk sends their fellowship nominations to a panel of professional architects. You're probably in their hands now.
waqas ... shouldn't you be working on your thesis? ;)
(kidding ... congrats on your acceptances!)
For those who applied to UPENN, did you guys actually submit a PDF that's no more than 20 pages in length as their website indicates?
my normal version (hard copy) was close to 50 and had to cut out a lot of stuff to make it less than 20, and did not look as good in the end..
@mitboi: I did. There were no dimensional reqs, just dpi, so I submitted as 1 spread=1 page. worked out perfectly because my hard copy portfolio was roughly 40 pages.

max page size 10 x 12
P.S.
I'm not a fan of UPenn trying to be different, or save trees, or whatever.
Are any of you going to the Cornell open house?

I see, thanks for the clarifications guys. It's a bit too late now tho. lol
anyways, I don't think I am getting in any schools this year. So I'd like to get some criticism on my portfolio please.

@li dandan, I shouldve included the original version as well. Didn't think of it, damnit!
lol it's okay villain. i didnt see someone else had posted the requirements too (this site is slow, remember...).
seems like ages ago we submitted our applications.
