As mentioned before, I'm worried about SAIC and accreditation issues/newness. I want some money from them, damnit! They need to build their program, which could be a benefit of going there, I suppose... more freedom, more attention from professors. The school is so prominent in the art world, that it must have some credibility in the arch world (I hope).
Pratt came up earlier in this forum. Someone said it is good for grad (only?) if you'll be working in NYC area, which I am not. So Pratt? We'll see. I'm going to visit Chicago and NY (and Philly, if UPenn comes through) in a few weeks. If I just LOVE Pratt, I'll figure something out for money.
I really liked CCA when I visited. It has a warm feeling. Very creative students. It felt less sterile than Berkeley, but UCB is UCB --meaning it's good. I think of the three, CCA is my favorite. Based on very little information.
I want to apologize for some of the unpleasant comments made under my name. Some of my dear friends thought it would be a laugh to make snarky comments while I left my laptop unattended. Lesson learned.
I believe Pult made an excellent decision applying to a list as extensive as his - the effort required was I am sure no small one, and to produce a portfolio as striking as his deserves our kudos. Having options means being able to make a decision about what kind of architect you want to be, rather than wishing you had an opportunity that you never took a chance on.
Also, while I have heard UCLA is a fantastic program, I didn't even apply there, let alone thought of it as my top choice.
As for my apps, I am currently holding out for Pratt, as Princeton (my total shot in the dark) and GSAPP (a reach but hopeful one as I've done work there) thought better to pass me over this year. Has anyone who got the "application incomplete" email heard any further news? I resent a transcript and contacted a recommender, but haven't heard anything in the past couple of days....thanks for any updates.
wileycount, you've got some weird friends (if what you said is true).
Most people who decide to infiltrate another's account would probably write something along the lines of "OMG PENIS MY PENIS IS BURNING" or "I HAD SEX WITH MY 4 YEAR OLD DOG AND HE FARTED ON MY DICK".
Such comments, after all, would leave much more of an impact than the faintly snarky comments that your "friends" left.
hell raiser: I applied to GSD and i live in London. Not sure if they're still sending them out, some other international students on here have received a package already so...not sure what that means. Where do you live? According to Gradcafe, most of the acceptances should have been received by the end of this week...
Crazy. Berkeley High '01 here too, Cal '08 after. Also applied to Cal for Arch, but as much as I love Berkeley/the bay area, it's time to be somewhere else for a while. Getting in would be bitter sweet, not sure what I'd do.
GSD needs to get their act together (before we all crap bricks!) I heard that they get well over 1000 applicant each year. That means they receive over $80,000 to process all of the applications!
well said tyMArchII. Every time someone rings the doorbell I nearly kill myself running to the door. For $80,000 you'd think they could send an e-mail!
wtf cincinnati... both acceptance and rejections from people, and nothing for me...
LIG... if i dont hear anything by friday, we need to meet up and having a serious drinking session on ludlow or in mt adams
I am the Graduate Advisor for Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. The Graduate Admissions committee has recommended your credentials for admission to the post-professional Master of Architecture program to the Graduate School. Congratulations! In due time, you will receive the official offer of admission by mail.
I realize time is short, but you are welcome to attend our open house for admitted graduate students next Friday, 26 March. If that event is not convenient for you but you can visit the school on another date, please feel free to do so. In the meantime, the post-professional program director, Professor Larry Doll (l.a.doll@mail.utexas.edu), and I would be happy to respond to your questions.
Sincerely,
Richard Cleary
They also included a word document showing the itinerary for the open house. It looked very unprofessional. Plus this is super short notice.
mugged...i have spent the last few days accepting the fact that UC is a no, and that it is either knowlton or taubman for me.
would have been nice, but the alternatives are not that bad
are you in the cincy area?
I'm actually in the dc area. I wouldn't right off cincy just yet I feel like they haven't sent that many decisions out yet.
Yeah the more I start looking at the UMich program the more and more I like it. Im still waiting on VT, Cincy, Syracuse, and Rice (assuming I wont get into Rice though)
UMich beats all though depending on potential aid given by the others.
and for those overseas wondering how GSD will get to us..
oh well it's only obvious that they'll send their wax sealed scrolls via owls.
so when we hear the strong thud in the window and open it to retrieve the precious parchment from the owl's sweaty beak, we can all feel as special as Harry Potter when he learned about the existence of GSDHogwarts. IS THIS PLACE FOR REAL???
imagine...the nice scroll signed by the hand of our headmaster himself, Professor Mostafumbledore.
the only downside is that apparently the only house available this year is the Slytherins. you know...with Snapeford Kwinter...
What do you do if a school seems to have totally forgotten about you and your applications.
Assuming that Tulane did get all of my materials, they should have notified me of accept or reject by March 15th , by email only. I have actually not been contacted by them in any way. Some of my materials were a few days late, but since I got an e-mail eventually that said all supporting docs were received, I think that I at least should have gotten a message that said I was a. Rejected b. Your stuff was late so we decided not to consider you or c. Accepted (which I absolutely doubt.)
Should I send them an e-mail or wait until the end of the week? Has this happened to anyone else?
call or email asap. it's in your best interest to notify them as soon as possible, considering they really did make a mistake and forget/lose track of you along the way...
if they didn't forget you, no harm done. then at least you'll know.
attack !!! call, fax, email. let them know they cannot f**k around with hardcore applicants like us. if they won't give you the answer, you will GET the answer. pretty much like chuck norris.
ok..this might be rhetorical but:
got into Yale, GSAPP, and Princeton.
(still waiting for their formal envelope with eventual $ offer)
no sign from GSD ( you know...knights and owls...)
should i still debate where to go...or..."you don't say no to Princeton"
I got into Tulane yesterday with a 10k scholarship so I think they are processing on a rolling basis (my application materials were all in about 3 weeks before the deadline). I wouldn't worry just yet ...
i wouldnt count on $$ from UMich... i got in 3G with 8k of money. still doesnt help the 50K+ out of state. I am intrigued by the GSI aspect in year 2 and 3, but only a select few get full ride and stipend for it.
i was not that impressed with the program at tuabman. the digital/fabrication aspects are great, but with the new dean, i don't pick up on a clear direction for the program. I think the whole program is in a bit of a transition right now. I sat in on a few student crits and was a little underwhelmed. For the $$ i was expecting alot more.
yeah I would at least give the till the end of the week. Its only the 16th. Give them some time to process everything and if you still haven't heard in a week or so then send them an email
Curious, why is MIT your top choice? What is the difference between MIT and GSAPP in your eyes? and what makes MIT a better studio environment? Also, do you have any statistics regarding architecture schools producing architects?
(from design intelligence which you recommended to someone else)
Thanks. (anyone else who knows something, chime in!)
yeah im in the 2g program. got 10k but yeah that still doesnt make the 50k that much more affordable. I think the biggest selling point for me is the fabrication aspect though.
I wasn't took impressed with the thesis work in the publication they sent, but I did take a look at the studio offerings from the past two semesters and the projects showed some promise.
Another big selling point for me is the master of science in design research program they offer. I would be very interested in doing that after finishing the MArch (assuming I can come up with the funds)
BOS02135: Give it some time... Hopefully you'll hear some good news within the next few days. I'm up for drinks anytime... Just shoot me an email via my Archinect profile.
I read this on archdaily.com regarding school rankings. Not that any of us could (or maybe would) change our applications now, but it's interesting to hear what practicing architects have to say about the new blood.
"As a principal of a California architecture firm, it would be really nice to find Cal Poly (slo) or Cal Berkley grads that have 1/10th of the technical expertise (hvac, electrical, structural, etc), knowledge of professional practice, knowledge of history – - – not to mention design capability- – that graduates from those “mid level” architecture schools have.
We need qualified graduates in this profession, but it is very difficult to find graduates of California Architecture schools that are truly ready to enter the profession. Getting accepted by these schools might be harder than other schools. After many years of practice and many interviews – - it seems that graduating from these schools is much easier than getting accepted….
What happened to schools like the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, The University of Illinois (Chicago and Urbana Champaign),Frank Lloyd Wright (Taliesen) School of Architecture… or the “School of work” ?
These rankings are ridiculous – the quality of an education is all up to the student and what that student does with that education after leaving school. These Rankings are good for students that want to go to a place that will help you to get good connections…..
The most useful thing about these rankings is the help provided to the vast majority of architects that did not go to these schools when determining whether or not they should join the AIA."
Yeah thats what I was looking at when I said I took a look at the studio course. I also looked at the fall 2009 ones as well. Thanks though.
and yeah i def. liked pigrams studio, I also thought yarinsky and unverzagt studios were interesting as well. The previous fall studios seemed pretty interesting too.
I have mixed feelings about michigan. On one hand Im really interested in digital fabrication. On the other hand I like a mix of practical and theoretical projects, so im hoping that michigan would be a good place to explore my interests in both.
I loved MIT far more than GSAAP because MIT seems to have a much much better sense of balance in their program. In my research, what I got from GSAAP pretty much aligns with what Waqas said waay back and later posted on his blog.
Essentially the attitude I got was: "we fiend through the dead of night exploring the digital capacities of our machines to redefine human civilization as we use New York City as an incubator for design" - and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
MIT has a very very strong focus on the cutting edge as well but what I personally like is that they balance it with a super super strong social architecture focus with a very global perspective. They embrace the idea of architecture as a social instrument for the entire world (developing included) and I just didn't get that from GSAAP.
But this is just me - more what I would like to do. and its not the right reason for everyone, i still applied to GSAAP because its incredible, but if the decision came down between the two (it wont), i would take MIT without hesitation.
i envy your arch dwgs,,, it seems refined and resolved to me.
Though I think i'm repeating what others have said, i think you should accentuate your plans and elevations in simple and clean layout. Your floor plans are strong enough to stand alone.
I am sure you put so much thought into your designs and i could see some sketches here and there. I think you should show those in more explicit way, as part of your process.
naomi_ thanks for sharing your portfolio. it's very artistic and i really feel like the option 3 students coming from bfa or some type of art/visual background have such an advantage. when i was younger, #s made more sense to me, so i studied econ. turns out, i wasn't really al that in to it, and really didn't excel. now a days, i can rarely make sense of #s.
anyway, i don't consider myself an ivy league type of student or even at the caliber of mit, but i applied to mit because it was def. my reach school. and i think ADavin hit it right on the nail with his perspective on mit.
what really attracted me to their program is the global/social responsibility component... too bad i'm expecting a no from mit.
glad waqas mentioned his acceptance to mit through the mail...i'd be ok with a rejection since i wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. though, i'd probably be more willing to go broke for mit. i'd choose mit over all...but that's just me.
tyMArchII: at UT-Austin i got instate tuition waiver and a stipend. unfortunately, i found this out early last week from Larry Doll, so my guess would be theyve notified everyone by this point. but at least you have columbia, id gladly trade. waiting to hear from GSD as well.
o1nichols... here r my thoughts :-)
Not highly researched stuff --- but just thoughts !
MIT & GSD top the list, just because Boston is my 1st choice. I've been in NYC & Boston & guess I pick boston. MIT over GSD, because MIT offers 3 years as compared to GSD's 3.5. DI Ratings wise: GSD =1, MIT =2, according to DI rankings & GSAPP =3. (DI ratings 2008).
Other reasons: While at MIT, you can cross register at GSD too, everything but studio. Gives you more options when choosing a class. Why i said: studio environment better at MIT. Cause the students are very competitive but still seem they to have a good social atmosphere. GSD: everyone's on their huge headphone, cut off from the rest of the studio :(. GSAPP has a friendly atmosphere too but Avery 500 & 600 level are crowded. Plus, looking at reviews and attending the one at GSAPPs & GSDs, it seemed that projects at MIT & GSD stood to be stronger.
Take a class: living architecture at GSAPP. Compare the same class at MIT. At MIT, it is backed by there Media Labs. Results: The MIT student projects are a lot stronger than the GSAPP ones. Don't know if other schools offer Living Architecture. There is little doubt that technology wise, MIT is stronger.
For me the winner would have been the AKP, the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, which is only an option at GSD or MIT. Much of my work was geared towards the Middle East, so I thought the options for such programs at these schools would be a big PLUS point.
More thoughts: Being NY/Paris... I've spent a year at GSAPP. I think I've been able to experiment with some of their best courses. Another world class school for 3 years would be a good choice.
So after all that said but on a special note: As I haven't GOT into anything but GSAPP and it is an awesome school, I'm probably going there. And it would 'certainly' be nice to have you in the same studio / same workspace. So maybe you can choose GSAPP over MIT :-)
I love your sculptures, especially wave machine...
it'd so much better if i can see that in motion.. perhaps it's my silly idea, but playing with camera shutter speed would help?
I also liked the flute dwg too, though i wish that if you could differentiate the lineweights in ACAD. did you, by any chance, take summer arch course in Cal? i don't know the project but the process resembles what people did in studios.
word2bird, I agree that applicants with art background have advantages, in a way they express their works so freely and in unique way. I spent my studio life on defending my bull crap and I feel like I have not been expressive as I wanted to be.
btw, if you option 3 folks get into Cal, please buy some textbooks from me!!
Anybody heading to LA to check out the open house at UCLA in a week and a half? Id really like to stop in and get a feel for the school, but sure could have used a little more lead time. Not sure I can fork out the 700 bucks its going to cost to fly out for the weekend.
i don't think it's really all that worth it to spend all that money to fly in for ucla's open house. it's a great program. actually, this is really crazy, but i've been to their open house twice. once in 2007 and then again in 2008, only applied this year though and have a feeling i won't be admitted, which is just as well since i did my undergrad there and i'd like to venture out. i'm also not a fan of the west side and westwood all together so there's that.
hmmm... on second though, if you're really considering their program, it may be beneficial to get a feel of the city, the people, and their department. they have really great faculty. i'm a greg lynn fan!
Thanks Stasis,
I did do Berkeley's program this past summer. It changed me from MFA bound to M.Arch bound. The flute project was the first, so it was all about learning CAD, which I did very quickly due to all the detail. I had about 10 lineweights, and no one noticed! I should have done more test prints.
jf123: ::whew::, thanks, I guess this year every admissions office was swamped. If I don't hear anything by the end of the week, ill ask. The waiting is annoying though.
I almost went to Tulane as an undergrad and have visited several friends there who were undergrads (and I have a younger cousin who was just accepted into their 5-year arch. undergrad!) , so I am familiar with the general campus environment and love it - However, the program (if I remember correctly) was said to be quite small and only have 50-ish people. I got the feeling the Arch Masters' programs were not as well integrated into the rest of the school, so I was worried that could eventually become confining.
Have you been to an open-house/visited specifically for the grad program? I am hoping that impression is wrong... NOLA is really an excellent location.
2010 M.Arch applicants, commiserate here!
Anyone know if GSD is still sending out FedEx to international applicants?
Does GSD send out in waves? With earliest wave this year being last week?
How many of you are international and have already been accepted to GSD? And where do you live?

Though I think i'm repeating what others have said, i think you should accentuate your plans and elevations in simple and clean layout. Your floor plans are strong enough to stand alone.
I am sure you put so much thought into your designs and i could see some sketches here and there. I think you should show those in more explicit way, as part of your process.
good luck to your application.
naomi_ thanks for sharing your portfolio. it's very artistic and i really feel like the option 3 students coming from bfa or some type of art/visual background have such an advantage. when i was younger, #s made more sense to me, so i studied econ. turns out, i wasn't really al that in to it, and really didn't excel. now a days, i can rarely make sense of #s.
anyway, i don't consider myself an ivy league type of student or even at the caliber of mit, but i applied to mit because it was def. my reach school. and i think ADavin hit it right on the nail with his perspective on mit.
what really attracted me to their program is the global/social responsibility component... too bad i'm expecting a no from mit.
glad waqas mentioned his acceptance to mit through the mail...i'd be ok with a rejection since i wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. though, i'd probably be more willing to go broke for mit. i'd choose mit over all...but that's just me.
tyMArchII: at UT-Austin i got instate tuition waiver and a stipend. unfortunately, i found this out early last week from Larry Doll, so my guess would be theyve notified everyone by this point. but at least you have columbia, id gladly trade. waiting to hear from GSD as well.
o1nichols... here r my thoughts :-)
^^^is that archinect flirting? aww....cute
ahhh i've perfected architecture flirting over the past 5 yrs lol...however, as it is, i will most likely be at GSAPP as well... :) we can be buddies
ncro54,
I love your sculptures, especially wave machine...
it'd so much better if i can see that in motion.. perhaps it's my silly idea, but playing with camera shutter speed would help?
I also liked the flute dwg too, though i wish that if you could differentiate the lineweights in ACAD. did you, by any chance, take summer arch course in Cal? i don't know the project but the process resembles what people did in studios.
word2bird, I agree that applicants with art background have advantages, in a way they express their works so freely and in unique way. I spent my studio life on defending my bull crap and I feel like I have not been expressive as I wanted to be.
btw, if you option 3 folks get into Cal, please buy some textbooks from me!!
Alright, so here.s how it stands:
Princeton-out
Yale-out
UCLA-in
Pratt-in with $
Still waiting on MIT, GSD, and UPenn.
Anybody heading to LA to check out the open house at UCLA in a week and a half? Id really like to stop in and get a feel for the school, but sure could have used a little more lead time. Not sure I can fork out the 700 bucks its going to cost to fly out for the weekend.
Although there IS always the train...
i don't think it's really all that worth it to spend all that money to fly in for ucla's open house. it's a great program. actually, this is really crazy, but i've been to their open house twice. once in 2007 and then again in 2008, only applied this year though and have a feeling i won't be admitted, which is just as well since i did my undergrad there and i'd like to venture out. i'm also not a fan of the west side and westwood all together so there's that.
hmmm... on second though, if you're really considering their program, it may be beneficial to get a feel of the city, the people, and their department. they have really great faculty. i'm a greg lynn fan!
NOLA is really an excellent location.
i'll second that, sweetpotato pie...NOLA is the best city in the world ;)
If anyone wants a copy of the design intelligence e-book (ranking and details on programs) let me know. I can email it ! It's DI -2008 though
It's not the best and don't go strictly by rankings... but it's a nice reference !
