next victims: new orleans' modern schools?

grabbed this from the news last night -

http://lifewithoutbuildings.net/2008/08/preserving-the-modernist-schools-of-new-orleans.html

- and i think it's something that archinect could rally around. if we can rally mapa troops, maybe find some new orleans help, and contact the organizations already involved, we might be able to have some impact.

primary challenge will be getting documentation of the endangered schools and determining whether all or just some merit full-on effort. i'm not interested in saving every school for the sake of saving it, but some will be valuable because they're part of the region's design legacy and/or because they're important cultural touchstones/landmarks in a neighborhood's history. others might just be easy to recycle into new community amenities rather than starting from scratch in a community with limited resources.

i know a couple people in NO, including an arch historian who focused part of her career on louisiana modernism. haven't had contact in years, but that might not matter.

also, i have a good amount of experience renovating mid-century schools for contemporary use, so i kind of know what i'm getting into.

i couldn't figure out what was already happening with the organizations jimmy mentioned, but i'll try to put out some random fishing emails.

anyone interested?

seems as though these buildings could easily be adapted to community centers, job training centers etc. or does new orleans not need these things?
