xs XS: extra small Excess

Wagon Wheel School
653 North Cahuenga Blvd, Hancock Park
7:30pm.

This summer the LA Forum's “On The Map” series draws from the spirit of excess celebrating the obsessive spirit of the small project, and maps a momentary constellation of Los Angeles projects that speak to larger aspirations than size. This work, although not immediately traceable to the conventional virtues of practicality and economy, reveals an intense and considered labor of energy and devotion to the design process and its life beyond completion, making a big impact through small scale interventions.

All lectures are Thursday evenings beginning at 7:30pm. Typically, the event begins with an informal touring of the premises, followed by a 45 min.-1 hour lecture on recent work, with a focus on the project at hand.

Admittance is free for LA Forum members and $15 for non-members. Forum membership can be purchased at the door.

i have attended a couple of these lectures in years past and it seems that it is a pretty great series - the LA Forum does a good job of finding small gems within the LA landscape and giving attendees the access to prowl around and hear the designer speak about them.

i went to last week's in brentwood. it was a little far to drive - but francois perrin's wood box addition to an anthropologist's parents' house was a nice example of a completely hidden piece of art, and ended up being worth the traffic on the 10. the forum had the owner speak as well as perrin, and it turned out just as interesting to hear about his work and how his travels around the pacific had influenced perrin as he worked through the design.

plus they had free drinks and snacks...

Not only has the series has been a great informal discussion between the Architect and Client, but the upcoming projects in the series are not generally open to the public.
