nariman, to get 50k/year as an intern... is probably very slim. Although, I roommate that started at 45k/year up in San Francisco.

DJ Tanner, congratulations!

I am jealous and I feel a bit robbed.
I told myself that I wouldn't do this, but here it is:

M.Arch I Applicant
B.S. Architecture
3.65 GPA, 3.89 in Major
1270 GRE, 5 in writing
portfolio
Won many design awards/competitions.

Rejected:
MIT
UPenn

Still waiting:
Ga Tech

I know my portfolio could always be better and include some professional work, and more 3-D modeling, but I didn't think it was bad. I have to ask, what did I do wrong?
I think I will apply to more schools next year.

rhyane-I agree you have some great work and an interesting graphic style to your drawings but it comes off as kind of a clutter of info. Spacing and Heirarchy would give it some needed clarity and allow for more of a narrative througout the portfolio...I can't follow some of the tiny drawings either. Good Luck.

Is anyone going to the Penn next week? If so I'd love to exchange e-mails and get your review of what takes place. thanks.

Apr 4, 08 1:39 pm  ·

rhyane: very interesting portfolio, but I second the comment about developing a stronger narrative within each project. I think ports are more about revealing your design process than showing your skill.

Nice stats though... if you applied to more schools I'm sure you would have got in.

wow. never expected it, but i think (THINK) i just got into U of T. got an email saying they hoped i had a chance to review their offer, but of course i havent gotten it and the website still says my application is under review. the letters late probably because im in the US.

the final tally, in order of decision and just approximate dates:

UT Austin - rejected mid/late march
Columbia - rejected mid/late march
Parsons - rejected 3/31
Virginia Tech - accepted 3/31
Rice - rejected 4/03
Toronto - accepted 4/04

ill be heading to TO for their end of term graduate studio reviews next week. anyone else plan on being there? then the same deal at tech the week of may 4th.

for those who peruse these boards next fall, looking for clues, i had pretty much given up hope after waves of acceptances went out and i had nothing but silence. then a few rejections. i recommend sparing yourselves the strain on your wrists by constantly refreshing archinect and thegradcafe, but youll probably do it anyway. just wait it out, maybe pick up a new project. i started sewing myself a pair of leather driving gloves to pass the time.

Ahoy, I got my U of T big package today. Here's how I did. So I'm done with the waiting, and now I have to decide. Is it wrong to tell a school that you're going to go but then change your mind?

Pratt - Accepted
Parsons - Accepted
UBC - Accepted
UofT - Accepted
Columbia - Rejected (i think the reason was: scored 430 on the GRE verbal)

I don't know what to do. I want to go to Pratt so I can live in NYC but it's expensive for me as a Canadian with limited chances to get scholarships.

Congratulations to all of you who got successful results!!!

I managed to squeeze an answer out of SCI Arc. I might be the first applicant to get hold of the results.

Hi Genevieve,
Under these circumstances, and in the interest of time, I will make an
exception and give you our decision before the letters have been sent out...
After careful review of your application, the Admissions committee has
decided to offer you a place on the wait-list.

Okay, I'm going to slash my wrists now.

DJ Tanner: Yes I only joined this forum 2 days ago. I applied to SCI Arc and the AA. See profile.

SCI Arc-waitlist results will be out in May

nairman: that's a good selection you have there. which way are you leaning?

I'm am also "a Canadian with limited chances for scholarship." The Canadian schools are a great value for us domestics and Vancouver and Toronto are both large international cities that have a lot to offer... but NYC to me is the chance of a lifetime that I'm personally not going to pass up.

Mrbren: its safe to say you got into Toronto. I received the same email today with the package received a couple days ago here in Toronto. Congrats! Which way are you leaning?

druvius -

depends on what i find in my visits to each school. i already am familiar with toronto and really like it there. definitely a place where i could see myself -- at least for a few years. but i dont know that much about the program. the dept hasnt been all too helpful with info. so i want to get an idea of the philosophy/culture, the quality of work coming out and to what degree they teach their architects to build, not just design.

tech, i know, creates top notch builders. at least according to the practicing RAs ive spoken to on the east coast. they have lots of interesting hands-on projects, it seems. not as many as the TX schools i didnt get into, but plenty to keep you busy. thats definitely one thing ill be asking about when i visit.

what are your thoughts? you went there for undergrad, right?

Apr 4, 08 7:09 pm  ·

at the moment my chances of getting a giant loan are pretty slim. i live in vancouver now so UBC does not seem appealing although it's dirt cheap ($4500 a year. can you believe it?) I want to live in a big city so looks like I'm going to Toronto.

Like others, I am having a hard time finding out about their program. Where is the graduate catalogue? Where are the actual course outlines? What do you guys have to say about Toronto? And who's decided to go there?

nariman, grab me on facebook from the archinect group if you like. i can get you some information over the next week, and more when i visit after the 10th. i really am surprised at how uninformative their web sources are. but im working on it.

mrbren, nairman:

I did go there for undergrad and yes they do concentrate on theory. But my professors assured me that the graduate program contains alot more practical content as required for accreditation. As far what the exact balance is between theory and practice, you'll have to talk to the grad students and the faculty to get a more precise answer.

I can say that they are quite interdisciplinary, although some units are still developing (this can be a very positive thing - in my experience they were very open-minded and less rigid/dogmatic than other (older) schools I've visited).

Also, the school likes to accept alot of non-arch ppl... such was the case last year. This could be a little frustrating to an arch-background and the first year may remind you of undergrad, albeit at a much more intense pace.

As far as quality of work/students, I find the school to be on pace with the top American programs. I've visited Penn, MIT, GSD, and Yale and can assert that the work is comparable... I'm sure SkyCaptain would agree.

As far as the city is concerned, the diversity is great. I read somewhere that Toronto has the most evenly mixed demographic of any city in the world = great ethnic food, great social tolerance.

Hope that was helpful!

DJ Tanner: congratulations on the acceptances! Our backgrounds are very similar (me: non-arch background with BA English & Art History, GPA 3.2, GRE about 1100). I would love to see your portfolio. Please post it!

As for me, I only applied to GSAPP this year—just because I had very little time to pull everything together and because Columbia is the love of my life—but was rejected (damn it, I was sitting in Avery when I got their email!)

I only found this thread a few of weeks ago...but all of you guys, you were my sanity during the days of waiting.

Here is my portfolio, I would love any comments: http://www.box.net/shared/h9g65xhy8g

Vsoph - really like the simplicity of the layout in your portfolio.. it actually reminded me of my layout.. haha... anyway - i thought your pottery was great.. i loved it, it was so detailed and intricate... the only suggestion i have for you is to cut down on the photography.. or maybe move it to the end, after your pottery...

good luck applying next yr! apply to more schools!

this may sound stupid, but i want to keep my anonymity on archinect (said way too many embarrassing, stupid things here). if you're really curious, you can email me and I'll share my work with you.

last summer, i compiled a list of all the portfolios that were posted on archinect to help me start my own portfolio. a lot of these are too old and the links probably don't work anymore, but i may as well share it.

vsophiam,

i just had a quick look at your portfolio. i am tough so take my critique with a grain of salt. i realized i wrote a lot here and thought about just sending it to you privately, but since you've put your folio online, it might be helpful to others to read this as well.

that page with "blue print to become and architect..." has to be taken out. it is unnecessary. even as an exercise in typography, it is not good. there's quite a bit of drawing in there, mostly of people. i would dedicate 2 pages max to that. i thought page 9 (with architectural drawings) is the better page, but you'll need to do lots of work like this and pick out the best ones. at the moment, it's too sketchy. your oil paintings are strong, i like 'sam'. take out all of your photographs. photography is really difficult. and yours are mediocre.

since you have time, start giving yourself projects. you have until at least dec 15 to do work. that's 8 projects at one month per. then you'll have projects to show in your portfolio instead of one off pieces. this will demonstrate your ability to manage a large scale operation as opposed to creating one solo drawing or sculpture.

for examples of this, i'm sharing my portfolio. it's the online version so there's no layout or anything, but it will give a good idea of the works. i will take a photograph of my printed portfolio and submit it here for examples of binding methods and page layout.

good luck with your applications for 2009!

vsophiam: i'll be brief. great start. lose the "blueprint" - no time for this sorta thing in my opinion. drawings - choose 2-3 (the more abstract ones work for me). oils are strong - save till end. photos - definitely eliminate. pottery - love it, but needs formatting. Overall - in need of formatting.

*mrbren,

i don't have facebook. but i would like to know what you find out when you get back. are you going to an open house of some sort or are you just going to Toronto for a visit? anyway i would appreciate whatever you find out. Although I'm pretty sure I'm going to Toronto now, it helps to know more. You can also email me [email protected]

*Druvius

Thanks for the info on toronto. Yea it's good to know U of T is has of the oldest arch programs in north america. They opened in 1890!
