Wow, what a trip down memory lane. Reminded me of the good old times.

At my old firm we got the whole "no bonuses this year" talk. My new firm doesn't give out bonuses only anual raises based on reviews.

At my firm they announced that nobody is getting a raise this year, but they didn't mention anything about bonuses. I'm not holding my breath.

Three years ago I got a Christmas bonus that equaled one of my paychecks. Two years ago I got three weeks paid vacation. One year ago I didn't get anything. This year I got laid off without severence pay, need to drop my health insurance, and move out my apartment because I can't afford it. I hope my family and friends will understand when they all get dried macaroni drawings for Christmas.

what percentage of offices would you say pay bonuses?

how many pay their overtime?

mines a negative on both

phuyake, macaroni drawings - and jewelry! - would be lovely. I'm thinking of making cast iron skillet handle cozies out of all the leftover fabric samples I have. It's useful, hand made, and a subversive way to remind my family and friends that cast iron is better than Teflon-coated (not that my dad has a problem with this; he's the one who engendered my love of cast iron - which reminds me, cast iron pans can still be found for cheap at garage sales. A little steel wool and elbow grease plus Crisco and you've got a great gift for a loved one.).

Also, dapper, I love your idea.

Oh yeah, what were we talking about? Bonuses. Hahahahaha none this year!

damn, i have to admit that i was quite surprised at what i was reading on the first page about the mention of 30% bonuses until i checked one of the dates and it was from '06... go figure.

fwiw, i'm at a big E+lil A with about 45 and got $700 after only working for 3 months with this as my first post m.arch job. We're still busy this year, despite the economy (knocks on wood) but i'll happily take anything they give me since i've worked more than my share of 60hr weeks with no OT but a 5.5% raise in July.

for christmas, i'm making drawings for the fam from my various travels as graphite and a roll of vellum is quite cheap.

Our office had a great 2008 and so we are getting bonuses this year.. not sure the percentage of pay yet... but, they aren't going to look at raises until the third quarter of 2009 at the earliest.. depending on the economy, maybe no raise at all in 2009. All in all I am happy.

Oh, medium sized office with locations in Seattle and Portland.

Thanks for the sympathies everyone, but it is what it is, I (or everyone who's found themselves in a similar situation) will figure something out. I just thought it was funny that out of all the dead threads, this one comes up now from a spammer. Too funny. But maybe he/she isn't too far off, I'm going to look into software employment and my Euro cup betting options tonight.

Dapper, I like that idea. The macaroni drawings require too much effort. And it worked with the "Human Fund" in Seinfeld so why not.

Here is a question for all you employees out there. We had a very good year, and would normally give pretty hefty year end bonuses. We have the cash to do it. However, I am concerned about next year. It would be nice to keep cash in the firm to be able to pay people instead of laying them off, and delay the bonuses to see what happens . How would you feel about that if you were an employee here? Would you feel ripped off, or happy that we have a plan to keep people employed?

archie...long as you don't go out and buy a new beemer...I could live with it. When times are tuff...do't be splashy.

Already have a beemer (old!). But seriously, I am thinking of giving a talk to the employees, especially the younger ones who have not been through this. There have been several times in the past when I was an employee, and went several months at half pay during lean times. I also "laid myself off" for 3 months when a firm I was working for was slow- I knew I could get a temporary job with an old boss.

But I hope that employees realize what most employers are facing: I have already moved around my personal savings ready to put cash back in the firm to keep people on payroll, have arranged for a line of credit, and prepared my family for the possibility that I will not take any pay out of the company for several months.

Wow archie - it's nice to see an employer is looking ahead. I think that is a great idea (talking to the employees) as there are so many people out there that only think of the here and now. They'll probably be a lot more understanding, especially if you decide to go the non bonus route. Another possible suggestion is to talk to them about the foreseeable future and give them a SMALL bonus as a token of your appreciation. That way the understand the reality of the situation but don't feel jipped, as can sometimes happen to those that live under a rock.

Actually melt, I was thinking of pretty much doing that- giving them part of the bonus, telling them they need to try to save it in case we have to eliminate bonuses next year, or reduce pension plan contributions, or both. And if in March or so it looks like things will be ok, we can give the rest of the bonuses. If things are worse, then we have additional cash to keep going. In my experience, the best thing an architecture firm can do is to keep good staff, and get yourself geared for the upswing that always follows a downturn. At least then you have a chance to make up for all the money you lost! The firms that do the worse are those that can't afford to keep good staff, and are pretty much shredded by the time the economy turns around.

every time i see this thread, i can't help but think of that broken casino machine that noi">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0351461/]noi[/url] keeps rigging to win blurting out BONUS TIME! with each small jackpot.
