And all these musicians with architects you mentioned are i'm sure great (or maybe not), and theres a very good chance a good many of us would like them.
If we had heard of them.
Maybe someone should put a magazine together to tell us about this music we haven't heard of and is good. And then it might became very popular amongst certain small segments of the population who happen to share certain experiences and interests, and then these musicians would get talked about on message boards amongst those certain people.
Exactly, everyone has a limited amount of time to devote to anything. After factoring in a,b,c, we are left with x amount of time to go music hunting. Music has different levels of importance for different people. I am just guessing pitchfork has a wider distribution those you mentioned, but still markets itself outside of top 40 mainstream. Therefore your typical somewhat curious music listener stands a better chance of picking up the somewhat more available pitchfork. If s/he likes what they hear, they may see no need to go further. Or they may follow one of the sub-genres down its road to one of the more specific mags.
"What rubs me the wrong way is all this jumping on J for liking some incredibly mainstream music, while everyone else seems to listen to the same rotation."
If the entire list is going to chide someone like J. for not looking harder for different types of music, I think it is entirely relevant to point out that not many on this list seem to be digging very deep either.
really........"has anyone ever heard of the Decemberists?"
no, only you and anyone who has turned on FOX television in the last year. come on.
I'm not mad at anyone?........but this indie eletism is retarded.
i'm amazed that so many keep their playlists so new and consistent. i get bored with similar sounds over an extend period of time. for every sufjan give me a sly stone tune, for every clap your hands say yeah - a george jones and a stevie wonder.
cotd, I somewhat agree with you, but I think you're approching it in a somewhat silly way.
I don't think the entire list was chiding J...that was just a few people...
and Something over there's question about the decemberists was his first post in the whole thread.
so while a couple people may be "indie elitists", everyone else was just saying "this is what I've been listening to"
people tackle topics like music and movies in different ways, you can't expect everyone to look down the same paths you have.
"digging deep" is relative and depends on what you tend towards and where you're coming from in terms of musical background. if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.
it seems almost as if you're being an indie elitist towards the indie elitists.
I missed the J being chided bit, so at least I understand where you're coming from now. I just hate these 'my indie scene is more indie than your indie scene' pissing matches.
steven: I never ment to say that peyroux was not the real thing - She's a great singer. It's just that for that style of music, I'm so used to tape hiss and the effects of old tube (or ribbon) microphones, that a pristine digital recording feels a little surreal to me.
Got me thinking, while I find architecturally offensive the thoughtless faux reproduction last century's norms, I am ok with a similar perversions of music?
However, were someone to thoughtfully, actually, reproduce the same building, I doubt I would have the same disdain. Despite the amount and various types of music I listen to (i'm a cad monkey), I am yet uneducated about the nuts and bolts of what makes music go together. Now, is Madeline Peyroux (for example) thoughtless faux, or the real thing reincarnate? If addressed appropriately, is it ok to be a throwback?
I am new music retarded. I am good at a few things but finding new music is not one of them. The new music I do listen to is stuff that my friends expose me to, or that I read about on forums (ahem), or that I hear in my brief stints in radio or internet listening. Mainly I just can't spend as much time finding new music as I'd like to be able to. Plus I think men have some sort of built-in gene that automatically downloads new music when it is produced, whereas ladies like myself are typically lacking this DNA.
In any case I must take this opportunity to thank people like vado and all of you for talking about this stuff so that I may partake.
Also, I like the Decemberists. Right now I'm listening to The Streets.
steven brought up stevie wonder...reminds me of this album...i like the strangeness of the image on talking book...he looks like he's communicating with some ants...the title talking book is on a fairy tale vibe...the music inside seems disconnected with the album cover but he sings about love as if he knows every aspect of it...musically, how does he come up with that shit!?...is always my question when i listen this album...
I agree.......
I am trying not to be the elitist towards the indie elitist........and my apologies if it has rubbed that way.
As someone who is always trying to find new music (not to say specifically hard to find music) it can be frustrating pulling up a thread and it seems to be cheerleading for a very small slice of the spectrum. I like to keep one ear in the indie world.......it can produce great things, but it is also guilty of tons of retreding and trend making.
no elitism intended.
but there has to be more than just indie?
is there any mainstream that is legit?
any guilty pleasures?
whats your favorite reggae?
whats your favorite rap record?
new country music vs old country music?
interesting acts that push the envelope?
music that hurts to listen to?
who writes great lyrics?
any good jazz?
shit, whats your favorite Tiny Tim record?
I dont care.........anything but the top 100 list from pitchforkmedia.com
I guess since the thread is current cd obsessions.......nobody is obsessed with much else.
i'm obsessed with every new joe henry album ( tho i still like the old joe henry albums, too), but since i've mentioned him several times on other threads, i've stopped bringing it up. you people will think i'm obsessed.
oy! what started as a simple "hey i am listening to (insert assorted listening pleasure of choice here) like it's going out of style!! what are all you out in archinect land unable to remove from your ear-drums?" thread has turned into "the battle of -honestly- who could care less"
this wasn't supposed to be an exhaustive posting of "look at my music collection i am sooo well rounded." isn't that promoting the same type of musical bigotry you are so against??
for some of us in isolated states where the best new band is green day, circa american idiot, and clear channel controls the music selection of the masses, finding something like the decemberists in the ether of force-fed top 40 is a big deal. that's cool. if you knew about the decemberists when they were playing the bar circuit of your home town and only 3 people were there to buy their $5 promo cd, hey, that's cool too.
at the end of the day, music is the universal language. I am sure buried deep in the ipod of every uber-indie-hipster you'll find a james taylor album, or european dance hits, or >gasp!< something remotely country.
there are so many bigger issues we could all be fighting about than indie elite vs. everyone else
i am listening to kylie minogue and loving every minute of it's cheesy infectious european danceness. crap? absolutly. but hey, running on 4 hours of sleep and stuck behind a desk, it get's me through the rough hours of the morning.
i'll follow by some sufjan stevens. and probably some jenny lewis.
I also own an original VHS of the vanilla ice movie.
cotd: I'll bite-
is there any mainstream that is legit?
well, here we'd have to get into an argument about what qualifies as mainstream (flaming lips new one is now #11 on billboard - indie mainstream?)
any guilty pleasures?
bluegrass. sam bush, jerry douglas, peter rowan, bela fleck, alison krauss... I also have a special place in my heart for the "pickin' on ___" serries (bluegrass covers of pop music)
also, the country-humor of john prine. tried to play it in studio once and nearly got crucified.
whats your favorite reggae?
peter tosh, captured live.
whats your favorite rap record?
I think I have to go with the beastie boys - paul's boutique. Rap is tough for me to gauge - I have to be in the right mood for it
new country music vs old country music?
while I think the nashville music industry is almost entirely fs%ked int the head, there have been a couple good new acts to slip through. Alison krauss and nickel creek, plus chris thile's solo albums.
but other than a few exceptions, the fogeys have it.
interesting acts that push the envelope?
while he's definitely hit and miss (the drugs also didn't help much), I think john frusiante (chili peppers guitarist) is continually under-rated. Shadows Collide With People is way better than anything RHCP has put out.
music that hurts to listen to?
I remember reading something about a german techno band that was experimenting with frequencies that would cause spontaneous bowel movements in 50% of the people listening.
...but I am getting really sick of non-william orbit produced madona. she was already on my death list for her cover of american pie, this latest thing just needs to stop.
who writes great lyrics?
recently or all time? all time, I don't think anyone comes close to dylan.
recently....I don't think there's been an album with really stellar lyrics in a while...but honestly I was pretty impressed with jenny lewis' solo album.
any good jazz?
way too huge a topic to address here. needs it's own thread. of the newer breed I really like Medeski martin and wood.
Disclaimer: I haven't read any of this thread. But the last 48 hours I can't get enough of Drive By Truckers Southern Rock Opera Act 1, especially "The 3 Great Alabama Icons" and "Wallace".
If i was chiding j i wasn't intending to be elitist, i was actually trying to debunk j's perception of people who like obscure music as being just that, cool and elitist, although there are people like that, because for the most part i think people who like obscure stuff came to discover it by being fans of music, plain and simple. Not everyone chooses to like obscure stuff and thats fine, j's fine with liking what he likes, i don't like a lot of indie music myself. i think people just find whatever in music that is a reflection of themselves and run with it and maybe that means its off the radar, maybe its not, so its not really an elitist thing, its just something that happens by default.
dvorak- symphony no. 9 (sterotypical i know, but hey, it's catchy)
west indian girl- west indian girl (get's me jazzed about moving to LA)
paul van dyk- politics of dancing 2 (for the late, late nights this week)
turin brakes- ether song (trying not to listen to the optimist so much)
dr. zeus(it's like 50 cent but in hindi- so funny!)
My two cents / rant (is anybody reading this any longer?): indie rock is so damn played out. I agree with randar82- indie rock snobs- give me a break. o.k. there are a couple of great new acts that come along every year- yes Sufjan Stevens, yes Interpol, o.k. Clap Your Hands...maybe. But when's the last time you (yes snobs- talking to you) went to an inide rock show and really shook it, really did not give a %#$$@!! who was looking at you ironically quoting- my guess its been a long time, maybe never. Take a look at the audience at the next inde rock show you’re at- people put more effort into standing than shaking it or slam dancing- I don’t care, do something besides acting clever. What ever happened to punk? What ever happened to disco? Indie Rock = boredom. Who cares if you heard it before pitchfork did? Honestly, if you just want to treat yourself to a nice concert where you stand there and are visibly unmoved by the music, then might I suggest SITTING down to a performance at your local symphony hall or going to an experimental jazz routine at the one jazz venue left in town- a least you will be paying for musical talent. In my country, we would imprison all emotionally sensitive shoe gazers and force them to listen to The Clash and Sly and the Family Stone until they learned how to behave themselves at a concert…
There are a few acts that I have seen in recent years that break this mold- VHS or Beta, Out Hud, the White Stripes, Beck, The Hives- slim pickings though. For my money, I would rather go to a big cheesy stupid dance club, at least the people there don’t need to think about what it means to have a good time with music.
Recently, I have been almost solely on a diet of internet radio. My picks: Giles Peterson on BBC1, Benji B on BBC 1XTRA, tons of stuff on Samurai FM- Nik Weston, Mr. Scruff, Zebra Traffic, Michael Rutten, oh and Milk Audio out of Canada. And every since Jay Dee passed on almost obsessively listening to everything done by him- Slum Village, Tribe Called Quest, His last CD was pretty good too- Donuts.
o.k. please feel free to attack me now, I am going out to my local dance spot to shake it…
The new Amorphis album "Eclipse" is incredible. I seriously recommend it. Don't wuss out though because it has some death metal vocals in it, but a lot of clean vocals as well.

vhs or beta kills. from louisville, of course.
you're saying interpol, the white stripes, beck, and the hives break the "trendy indie rock" standard? I would disagree.
every genre/niche has it's quality, it's good-enough-to-be-enjoyable, and it's over-rated trendy critic darlings. "indie" is no different.
