READ THE GODDAM DRAWINGS, MR.DIRT-ASS CHEAP CONTRACTOR!!!

OMG seriously. I may have to recommend that my friend - not officially a client, but jeez I got myself into trouble thinking it wouldn't take much of my time to help this person out - flat out fire this bozo and hire someone else. It will cost more, but she'll actually get something that was designed rather than a mess of whatever the contractor feels like doing on any given day!

OMGOMGOMGOMG I'm so stressed over this. Never should have offered to help.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Assuming you didn't get paid and didn't recommend this contractor, you shouldn't stress out over it.  It's not your fault.  Did you do the documents?

I think it's funny, one week we have an article beating up this kind of representation, and the next week a defense.

May 17, 17 12:05 am  ·

"And it is art, from the most popular to the most refined, that is the well from which you can draw ready-made samples of your woke state."

This doesn't make any sense. A state of wokeness can never be static, let alone ready-made.

May 16, 17 10:12 pm  ·

Yeah, I'm even uncomfortable using the term "woke" in the way I did up in that last comment. As a 50yo white middle class Midwesterner I don't think it's my place to use that word.  Aaaannndddd....the only reason I clicked on this article in the first place was because it was the first time I'd heard the word woke used in relation to architecture. <sigh>

May 16, 17 10:54 pm  ·

It was design clickbait for sure.

May 16, 17 11:07 pm  ·

To be sure, but that said, I actually really did like the work included in the article!

May 16, 17 11:17 pm  ·

Not architecture. And most definitely not "art" in any sense of the word. Inane is the only way to describe it.

Surrealism = woke? Good to know. I was doing surrealism when I was in school as a response to the surrealism that was school. If the projects aren't meant to be real but explorations and expressions, surreal it is.

May 18, 17 10:46 am  ·
 ·

The images aren't woke (it pains me house that phrase in this context) so much as they are reactions to "post-digital" representation. I appreciate them as such, not too much ideographic notation like earlier Corner collages and certainly no children with balloons.

And the notion that being woke is surreal (as suggested in the article) is so far off base and dismissive...

I believed that once too, Rick. Then I worked with a few IDs who wanted to "transition to architecture". They got as far as heads of ID Departments and stopped there. I guess fucking up good designs right before CDs is a lofty enough goal without all that pesky lernin' and those damned exams. Let someone else give a shit about how to keep the water out and how to accommodate the disabled. I've got rugs to specify. Did I say specify? I meant paste a picture of in an InDesign file.

Interior Design is a great field. Architecture is a great field. With good communication, a project can make great use of both. But when the architect deigns interiors unimportant until late DD, or when an interior designer decides that the decided-upon scope isn't sufficient and starts changing the scope that was under the purview of the architect, shit goes sideways.

Its as though you can watch Ricki going off the deep end.  He comes back, after some sort of hiatus and his post are quick and to the point.  Since then, they have gotten more and more verbose.  Soon, the dumpster fires will be raging again.

In a relative sense... We are in the early stages of the initial rebuke by the community. Replies are starting to turn against him in a mild way. These will increase. Next someone will say "stop picking on Ricki." This will ease the pushback from the OPs briefly and increase his boldness in opinion and word count.

You reminded me... the lilac color that he painted the dining room was pulled from some dishes that his mom gave us that he remembered from childhood. Makes it even funnier. I'm helping to plan a significant event for one of the non-profits I work with and this just happened:  We invited a local person to give remarks who is very well respected and connected and is also a white male. His response was that he would love to help us on it but he has a personal rule not to serve on any kid of group or panel that is only white men so can we please forward him the other invitees? I about cheered out loud at my desk!  This is how it should be done, people!

May 26, 17 5:22 pm  ·
 ·
proto

hmmm, sounds a little self-serving...does it really matter who else has been asked to talk? maybe just reply in a way that confirms his request regarding white males without names?

May 26, 17 5:29 pm  ·
 ·

Yes, it matters when panels are solely made up of white males, as the majority of them have been for the last 500 years. And the only way that change can happen is people - white male and not - saying "I will only serve on panels that include diversity."

May 26, 17 6:42 pm  ·
 ·
proto

Not saying it doesn't matter big picture at all, just that it may be a PC way for him to get the info. Whoever he is probably shouldn't be basing the invitation on who else is gonna be there...maybe it's sincere, tho. I'll admit to being a cynic

Happy Friday TC! I've been buried in work recently, so the news is a little old, but I'm officially an architect now! I think I posted back in March when I passed my last exam but it's official now. NCARB took their sweet time reviewing my record and then they finally got around to sending it to the state. A day or two after that the state issued me my license.

May 26, 17 6:55 pm  ·

tintt, no. The plan was always to switch over to Everyday Architect when I got licensed. I could keep it, but I think it would just get too confusing. I will miss calling out architects on the forum behind the title of an intern, but maybe as Everyday Architect they'll think for a whole second before they dismiss my viewpoint. I still plan posting to the blog occasionally, so that won't change, it will just be under a different screen name. Over the time the focus might drift from internship issues, but I'm not giving up on it just because I've earned a different title.

Also, there's basically only 2 women characters, but they are both excellent. Men are the ones who've screwed up so many things recently! Or is that "forever"?

Mighty... picked the hospital based on factors other than the facility itself. It isn't either high end nor resembling of a bygone era. I do have a view out the window of another part of campus (the emergency room drop off) that is nearing the end of a renovation that is poorly designed though and it makes me frustrated to see the dysfunction. That probably gives it away.
