netizen - Yup, I went to Berkeley. She didn't mention AP so I'm worried that it will probably be for 3.5 yrs. A few of my friends that applied over the past few years have not been admitted with AP. So . . . guess I'll find out Monday.

samsonoio---yeah you should definitely find out. most of the berkeley people i know from last year and the year before got AP at gsd. some didnt---its not a questionm of your abilities but usually boils down to not having taken enough studios or tech courses. but congrats again---and youll figure out payment somehow if you really want to go.

Has anyone ever gotten into the GSD without a call? I would like to know so I can decide if from now on I will enter my apartment past the mailboxes or just go through my window to avoid any more rejections.

i just got the letter from ut-austin, which was waiting for me when i got home from spring break. good news!

to those of you who also got the letter: were you admitted to the first-professional program? if so, did the letter mention your specific placement into the program? mine didn't, so i'm also sort of worried that it is for the duration of the program... i just sent an email.

by the way, i never got the e-mail, so i thought that meant i wasnt getting in. the letter is postmarked march 16th.

so I emailed cincy re: a moderate extension to their march 24th "deadline" and got this in response. ( i just heard on saturday )

"We have sent out our offer letters to coincide with our peer school's admission accept dates. We intend to fill our entering classes as we receive offer replies with preference given to those received by the deadline. We hope that you will give serious consideration to our nationally ranked program."

Are they serious? How can they expect people to decide by this date, I give them 3+ months of waiting and they give me less than a week?

ive had a splitting headache all morning ... but the laugh from the letter to bob cured me. or it could have been the three advil i took 20 minutes ago.

I'm in NE and I haven't yet gotten a package or letter from the GSD. I'm gonna go out on a very short limb here and assume that I didn't get in, and that they only mailed acceptances on Friday (not rejections). Either Priority Mail or a small first-class envelope would definitely have gotten here by now, if not on Saturday.

Has anyone gotten rejected from Columbia yet?

Random question: several people have mentioned that they got five-digit scholarships from schools like Columbia and GSD. How common is this among people who don't absolutely NEED it, but of course could seriously benefit from it? I was always under the impression that with the exception of a few like Rice and Princeton, professional grad schools are generally stingy about grants for all but the neediest (instead only offering loans to those beyond the cusp). Does carrying an undergrad loan help in getting grants?

I realize this is a personal topic, so I'm trying to be as general as possible--not asking for personal stories, just people's broader impressions based on what they've gathered from their peers.

brujitadulce... when did you hear/ how did you hear from UT-Austin, and was it first professional? thanks for any info..

my experience thus far (Michigan and GSD) suggests that they take the total cost of attendance, subtract your fafsa expected contribution from the total, give you the maximum $18,500 in federal loans, and then offer you grants to (partially) cover the rest. i think that no one who needs assistance will go to the GSD without taking loans.

the amount of the grant offered probably varies more per student, perhaps based on the order in which your application is received by the financial aid office. my grant was sufficient to cover the difference between my federal loans, expected contribution, and total cost of attendance. the financial aid handbook, however, warns that many students may end up needing to apply for additional private loans (more expensive fees, higher interest rates) to cover any additional need not met by their grant/loan package.

i do not expect that anyone needing less than $18,500 in financial assistance would be offered a grant from schools such as GSD. please keep in mind though that my experience is only as a successful applicant, based on what i've been offered, i have no authoritative or inside information on the subject.

i've now got to set up a day or 1/2 day to go visit the school - i think i'd prefer for them to have an open house day but apparently they prefer for students to visit individually.

my online status check hasn't changed...i'm wondering if it's b/c the letter said i'm into the arch school but it has to go thru the graduate admission center as a formality (for all graduate students)...
