Go to Hilversum (sp??) MVRDV's Villa VPRO is there. They gave tours of it a few years back, probably still do. Look it up in the phone book when you get there.

The dock housing (currently forget the name, but master plan by West 8) is pretty interesting.

Take a canal tour.

Go to a football game if possible.

The floating flower market

Eat some pankuchen (pancake / crepes)

WARNING - the pot is MUCH STRONGER than most you find in USA.

The dock housing you are talking about mdler is called Borneo/Sporenburg I think.

I could also recomend WoZoCo´s house for elderly by MvRDV. It´s the one with the wooden boxes coming out. Looks pretty crazy but actually really nice up close!

There´s a Steven Holl museum by some cannal somewhere in the center of the city, if you´re into his struff. It´s green, very box-like and covered in steel net.

And then you have Utrecht, don´t know how far it it from Amsterdam, we went there by bus on a daytrip so not too long. There you have the Educatorium by Koolhaas and Double House by MvRDV.

Also check out the black skyscrapers by Wiel Arets, one of them is near the dock-area.

Rotterdam: kunsthal by Koolhaas is a must and the NAI seems to have interesting shows all the time.

Theres a huge amount of new buildings (MOSTLY by stars) being constructed in Almere, don't know how far they have progressed, but at least theres the amazing office-block by (I'm not sure about this) UN studio.

Well if your lucky the national soccer team are doing well in Euro 2004 in Portugal, this results in plenty of parties. Wouldn't count on it tough...

The national soccer leguea has ended last month and all star-players are doing above

pankuchen is GERMAN!!! the correct term is Pannenkoeken.

The pot is much stronger than anywhere else, thanx to years of cultivating ever getting stronger pot. not to long ago there was a small riot in the government: some bastards wanted to label super-skunk as hard drugs because of the amounts of THC it contained.

Utrecht is less than an hour train ride, trains go at least every 30 minutes. there's an 24 hr. service between rotterdam-the hague-amsterdam-utrecht.

What I've heard about Almere is that most of it is still under construction. As a city it can be interesting, it was build in the seventies and it's ever evolving. must dutch think of it as sub-urb hell

If you're planning to visit the Educatorium in Utrecht, go to the Uithof that's the university area where it's located. You'll also find the UN Studio Lab, Mecanoo faculty, new Wiel Arets library, NL Architects basketbar

Amsterdam right now is one big construction site. The central station area is totally reconfigured, they're building a new metro tube under the city, both the rijksmuseum and the stedelijk are closed for renovation, both have temporary exhibitions tough. The temporary stedelijk near the central station is supposed to be interesting. Things mentioned in above posts are offcourse interesting

Been there many times, my memories of the place is kinda blurred though... don't know why, perhaps as someone mentioned the quality of the dope there is quite phenomenal.
A lot of the architectural stuff is located inside the randstadt which is a sort of triangle between Amsterdam Utrecht and Roterdam (.nl correct me if i'm wrong I assume -perhaps wrongly- that you are dutch). dont' miss out the contemporary stuff by UN studio-Van Berkel, OMA and MVRDV. The villa VPRO is great you need to call them in advance to book a tour, it's really worth a look. Also the Schroeder House by Rietveld is awesome, you need to book a tour for that too as it is a listed building.
enjoy your trip.

Sorry if you got offended, that wasn't at all my intention, it's just that the .nl name kinda suggested to me you that you were probably Dutch, i did not intend to stereotype you either, although if you are all of the above it's absolutely fine by me anyway...
I like The Netherlands, it is a very particular environement where the boundaries between urban and rural areas seem almost undefined, which makes it a unique experience to drive between cities there, you never know quite were you are. In some ways it reminds me of some of the urban lanscapes you find in big sprawling American cities but at the scale of a country. I find people there quite chill and tolerant, amsterdam is a great place to visit, there just too much to do/see there, although it tends to make people overlook other great cities like utrecht.

one other thing in rotterdam: the 'De Unie' cafe by Oud that got destroyed during the war has been rebuilt (although not exactly in the same place where it used to stand i am told), the facade is some kind of architectural-size mondrian painting that follows the rules of the De Stijl movement and it's worth a look. you might as well pop in for a drink if you've got time.

I did an internship in Amsterdam, so here is a list of things I enjoyed seeing/doing:

Architecture to see: Wozoco. Borneo Spornberg and KNSM Laan. The Berlage planned neighborhood. Is Ijburg under construction yet? I would just rent a bike and ride out to these projects.

Bars/Clubs: Supperclub, Bep or Diep, Kamer 401 and Lux, check the shows at Paradiso. Stereosushi.

Other: Frolick in Vondelpark and check out the filmmuseum. Cafe deBalie is a nice grand cafe...great food. Walk kaizergracht and check out all the galleries/boutiques.

I'm as dutch as Bush is American :)

The bars mwad mentioned are good. Eating at supperclub is surely an experience you'll never forget! Bep used to be me hang-out when I lived in Amsterdam, Diep and Seymour Likely are also nice bars. At Rozengracht 133 you'll find club More and restaurant Nomads both done by the faboulus interior architects Concrete who've also done supperclub and bep, not to be missed! Mazzo accross the streets is also a nice down-to-earth club. For real authentic very good very cheap chinese food go to NamKee on the Zeedijk, don't let the crappy interior scare you the food is the best chinese you'll ever taste.

I think nobody mentioned The Hague yet, sure it's less exciting than Amsterdam or Rotterdam but it got's a nice collecting of modern highrise architecture. Our government recides in The Hague. The beachresort Scheveningen is a tram-ride away, which can get immensly crowded during hot days.

If you like old-school dutch cities go to Delft, between The Hague and Rotterdam. It's known for it's university, but the historical city centre is not to be missed, also with the canals and large houses
