to get this back to architecture - or at least artifact - the coffee CUP would be key. paper won't do, insulation sleeve or not.

i'm sure it's not only in kentucky that those who install holleys put the sticker on the window. likewise flowmaster, hooker, and hurst.

Only in my family, and I would say the most of the folks in the Great Lakes region in general--if car shows are any indication--put that stuff under the hood. External product placement isn't allowed. Hell, we even shave the badging off. No text identification allowed.

Like bldgs under construction, cars just look more interesting when you've got fenders covered w/ rugs & body panels pulled off.

Mystery Man, you beat me to reviving this thread.

But I was going to revive it tomorrow, after attending a hot rod show:

Funny, but while I think almost any building under construction is more beautiful than almost any completed building, I disagree about cars. They look sad to me when they're taken all apart!

(hmmm, preview doesn't seem to be working - hope my image link works!)

Pictures!

I've had the car bug sooo horribly lately. Just got off the phone talking with my father about the Pontiac Solstice the Mallett brothers are going to be doing. They're going to be putting a bloody LS2 Corvette V8 in it! Why? Because "the architecture was designed that way," says my father.

Dropping a LS2 in a hot little skate like that is definitely hot rodding. And I want one.

Hiya betadinesutures ,
I wish it was a 340. Just a 273. Speaking of driftwood's car bug, I can relate, but man once something gets a hold of me & can't stop. The car-bug is very dangerous for an architect. It does help my detailing though!

I do have a 340 & a 440 that might get used in this car some day. I shudder to think abt. using that 440 in the Cuda. I might need to change careers just to afford this bug.

don't forget MM that they put Hemi's in that mofo...440 is not easy, but compared to the 426 it's cake shoehorning that beast in that compartment.....do it, do it.

I'm not sure what your post has to do with Hot Rod architecture, but the yellow things are bumpers designed to keep the building from being shaken to pieces during an earthquake.

OK Here's the plan. We pick up this car on Saturday:

and my husband will customize it for me as my daily driver.

Then in a year we purchase for him one of these buildings:

and I customize it for him as an art studio.

At first glance it appears I'm getting the better deal - it's one sweet car alright!- but I think I'll make that little Butler building of his an amazing studio.

This is it - real hotrod architecture. I'll keep this thread alive through the entire process which could be years.....

I love butler buildings, I am insanely jealous of you liberty (for both the car and the art studio project). Oddly enough, I had a job interview in the Boston area on Sunday and I ended up sitting around with three people in the office talking about hotrod architecture for approx. 30 minutes...

Liberrty,
Now THAT's a car!!!! Paul Drake had to have owned that one. At first glance you are getting the better deal, but heh, heh, 'Ol Hubby's gonna eventually take over (I know I would). Nothing like covered, utilitarian space. Someday I'm going to finish my 9yr design & build my shop, but it won't be as straightforward as one of these bldgs (hence my post asking abt enclosed space under an exposed floor deck).

Check EBAy for some pre-engr'd/prefab metal bldgs. If you get a trailer, I'm sure that T-Bird will haul the 'kit'. Once again, it's nice to see such a great old car in such excellent shape...now you've motivated me to sand some bondo on Cuda#3.

Pixel, were you guys talkin about hotrod architecture because they knew of this thread? Or did it come up in some other way? I'm always curious if I start talking with someone about a topic here if they'll say "Oh yeah, I read about that on this website called "archinect"...

I have it listed on my resume as a current exploration. Yeah, its nerdy of me, but I've found its good to show that you're still active regarding the general discourse of architecture/design.

Speaking of customizing a Butler buidling, or my other long-term obsession, customizing a quonset hut, this was on Daily Dose today - and I loooove it!

Not really hot rodding, but definitely customizing!

Hotrod architecture has infiltrated my brain. I think about it all the time, and when zipping past this little house in Indy the other day, I said to myself "HOTROD ARCHITECTURE!!", stomped on the brakes, and took some pics.

This is by no means an earth-shattering project, but I think it's a good example of hot rodding: an obviously new intervention on an existing house, a personal approach, fun use of color, economical but not self-effacing...

North side

south side

There's another house nearby that I've thought for awhile might be hot rodded. I'll get some pics of it soon.

Tool album Amnesiac, which apparently did all kinds of musical "tricks" like chord changes based on harmonic progression patterns or something like that - I know nothing about music so that may be a nonsense phrase. Help me out here if anyone knows what I'm talking about! The point is, they did stuff that only hardcore music enthusiasts,

brubeck hit 'take five' is in 5/4, yet completely natural sounding.
http://bertscholtes.com/takefive/

"I often hear people say that they think jazz is too much plinkety-plonk, and yes, what a word that is, and that they can't stand to listen to it, because it sounds like everyone is just doing something randomly. This doesn't happen in Take Five, as we will see again in the 'Repetitiveness' part. In my opinion, this has also helped making Take Five popular with a lot of people, including those who would normally not listen to jazz."

much of music theory 'explains' the 'rules' of why certain music sounds 'good'.

My architectural interest lay somewhere along the lines of 'hotrodding' existing structures with contemporary interventions.
