San Francisco-based Cosmic has raised $1.5 million in funding for their micro-home product designs aimed at bringing “self-sustainable homes in California and beyond.” The company’s leading product, Cosmic ONE, is described as a “limited-edition high-quality micro-home” that can serve as an ADU, a primary single-family home, or a component in a wider residential community.
Cosmic ONE has been designed as an all-electric, prefabricated unit that can use recycled water for non-potable needs, as well as being equipped with a solar and battery system. The first 100 CosmicOne units will be available for sale in California.
“Building a new home and expanding an existing one today can be very challenging due to the intricate permitting process, labor scarcity, and complexities of site infrastructure works,” the company says about their proposal. “Prefabricated, self-sustainable Cosmic ONE enables us to add the configurable housing capacity California needs, giving homeowners a fast and sustainable way to build homes to house their expanding families, build a business, or earn new income.”
News of the company comes one month after Samara, an ADU company founded by a co-founder of Airbnb, began production in its Mexico factory. In February, meanwhile, we reported on the first 3D printed fire-resistant ADU concept in the U.S. currently under construction in Southern California.

I wish them luck, but history hasn't been kind to these startups. Whatever advantages factory construction offers are usually more than offset by local regulations and site conditions that require customizable solutionss
My guess is these will cost twice as much as a similar site built option. There are definitely advantages to prefab, especially when the building consists of a single module, but these will be only be a solution for the wealthy…..
The pricing doesn't look totally unreasonable, and I really like the module system - plenum modules above and below the living space that interlock so you can expand horizontally.
$279,000 / 385 sf = $725/sf + cost to run utilities (power, water, & sewer) = expensive
Am I reading these images correctly, the showroom model is a two room (with no bedroom) design while most of the drawing/renders appear to show a 3 (with full bedroom) room design?
The showroom model shown in photos is the Cosmic Studio and the larger models you’re referring to, in the plan drawings, is the Cosmic One.
